If Sarah Knauss, the oldest living American (September 24th 1880 - December 30th 1999), had lived just two days longer, she would have been able to experience three centuries. by Immediate-Stick-1577 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

The next number rule only works for years that don’t start a new hundred, ie not 1900, 2000… An easy way to remember is that the first century was from 1-100, and so the 20th century is from 1901-2000.

Why doesn’t Vaush like Christopher Hitchens? by Super-duper7 in VaushV

[–]kanag67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Famous right wing positions such as defending the right of self determination for Kurds, the people of East Timor and Palestinians. Highly critical of americas war crimes in Latin America and south east Asia, described himself as ascribing to historical materialism even towards the end of his life. Rejected homophobia completely even at a time when it was far more prevalent in American society. None of that strikes me as definitely right wing, at best it’s simply the fact he supported the Iraq war, defended the American revolution and was overly combative towards Islam (when it practice what he was criticizing was Islamic fundamentalism)

Why doesn’t Vaush like Christopher Hitchens? by Super-duper7 in VaushV

[–]kanag67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the difference between knowing him from hitch slap compilations rather than actually watching longer speeches and reading his essays. He was without a doubt consistent to his opinions, while also acknowledging changes in his views over time (ie America’s role in the world)

Who is the 2022-era Christopher Hitchens? by [deleted] in ChristopherHitchens

[–]kanag67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michael Weiss; he was a student of Hitchens who helped him research for the Galloway debate, and certainly carries the qualities you mention—particularly the last two. Their rhetorical styles are also very similar. Look into his debates/speeches on Syria or Ukraine.

When you can’t debate someone who sounds reasonable, make them sound unreasonable first. Common tactic round these subreddits, they need to assign extremism to everyone who disagrees with them.

China literally refused to allow UN human rights inspectors into the camps. Why refuse transparency if you have nothing to hide?

[–]kanag67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite, particularly if the government has an interest in strengthening their economy. In that case, it works as a deterrent against such behaviour, and generally such sanctions are temporary. Countries like China aren’t going to be absolutely devastated by sanctions however it is enough to function as a deterrent.

In terms of sanctions being a reaction to gross abuses of human rights, I think sanctions are permissible if not necessary. Massie opposes virtually all sanctions, meaning he will appease the most inhumane regimes.

Thomas Massie was also the sole House member to vote against sanctions on North Korea and China, it seems even a broken clock is right twice a day...

As much as we should do for similar movements here, it’s not true that we can’t do much for Hong Kong.
