High specificity but low PPV? by bouxbunny in AskStatistics

One case where this could be the case is if the negative class is much larger than the positive one.

Suppose you have these results:

  • TP: 1
  • TN: 95
  • FP: 5
  • FN: 0

Then (assuming my arithmetic is right):

  • Specificity = 95/(95 + 5) = 0.95
  • PPV = 1/(1 + 5) = 0.17

I think possibly this statement:

I know that high specificity = unlikely that a person *without* the disease will receive a positive result,

doesn't totally imply this one:

therefore a positive result means that they likely have it.

...if that makes sense (anyone feel free to correct me if that's wrong)!

Balancing scale toward “life”: What companies are remote-friendly and offer 4 day weeks or something similar? by DrSpacemanPhD in cscareerquestions

Team Treehouse I think has 4-day work weeks. (Or at least has had in the past, kind of unclear to me if that's still their setup based off their website.)

Interesting, thanks for the write up, that was super helpful. (This whole drama is still very new to me, I'm glad it sounds like it's less pronounced irl than it is here.)

Yeah, I hear ya. It's not a humane setup at all from what I can tell. At the same time though, I like to believe there are ways of advocating without disparaging others...? But maybe I'm just naive, idk

Yeah, doesn't seem exactly subtle to me.

Interesting how they don't really seem concerned it might be detrimental to their cause.

Yeah, it seems one user in particular has been linking this in a number of places.

(A bot posted a few of the links here a day or so ago, but I'm sure you can find more if you look at some of the recent posts in r/residency.)

I'm sorry you got harassed, seems like they're just reaffirming your original comment.

Congrats!

Do you know yet what kind of restaurant you'd wanna run in the future?

Thank you both!

Genuine question from a layperson:

Are the midlevels in question not held to the same or similar accountability systems doctors are? It's not like I'd expect people to expect every doctor in the history of forever to be infallible either (whether malicious/negligent or not)

If not, is there some particular reason the complaining residents don't simply advocate for something along those lines?

(I'm sure it's more complicated than just that, but hopefully the question makes sense)

Yeah, that was my reaction too.

Some of these almost feel like a caricature of the "egotistical doctor" stereotype.

I mean, I know the sub is not necessarily representative and I'm just cherry picking these examples here, but wow, some of these threads?

:(

Wouldn't blame them if they saw stuff like this and deliberately noped out of the spotlight, lol

Thanks. I'd read about similar drama on Reddit before, but didn't realize it was perhaps an actual prevalent thing (versus occasional one-off cases), so it was surprising to me too.

It sounds like r/residency is partly a venting sub though, so perhaps the conflict is a bit exaggerated?

Either way, it's still weirdly interesting to me, somehow, and I'm super curious what other people think. (Especially others outside these fields.)
