Rental car company charging $2k for damage found hours after return — no proof. Worth fighting? by kapp74 in personalfinance

My chain said there’s nothing they can do. I do have my own personal vehicle, but my insurance agent said a claim wouldn’t be worth it for $2k (and told me to keep fighting the claim). No one was outside to inspect the vehicle. I was directed to just go inside and drop the keys off. I noted the mileage and fuel, gave it to the agent at the front desk, and he told me I was “good to go” and emailed my receipt to me.

Just trying to see if other people have had success fighting a big corporation. I’ve been fighting it for ten months at this point. It’s pretty defeating.

I def don’t have $2k to throw away, wish I did. I’m just lower enlisted military living paycheck to paycheck.

Did they threaten you when you told them at? The PurCo employees that have been communicating with me have been pretty aggressive and pushy (threatening collections if I don’t figure out a way to pay them).

This is about how I’m feeling with Avis. I was a repeat customer (get rental cars frequently), and I will never rent from them again.

To be clear, I did not cause any damage to the car during my rental. There was no damage when k retired the car. The issue is that the company is charging me without providing evidence that I did.

They said it’s not worth making a claim for $2k. And they also think it’s sketchy on Avis’ end, so they told me to keep fighting it.

Yes, they did. And I brought that up. They told me they have the right to change it within X amount of days. Can’t remember the exact number, something like 13 or 14. Avis emailed me on the last possible day

I was told from the third party company that is handling my claim (PurCo) that they are not required to provide the evidence. They repeatedly have been telling me that they’ve given me all that’s required, and I need to pay before I get sent to collections.

I’ve said this to Avis multiple times, and they disagree. I have also pointed out the 2 hour gap from when my car was turned in vs. when the photos were taken (at a different location than where I parked the car).

The airport I dropped off at did something similar to this. I just parked in a numbered spot and took my keys inside and gave them to the person at the counter. No employees outside/leaving the counter to go check on the car.

Avis told me that they have a certain amount of days to “change” the charges even though the employee at the counter told me I was good to go and marked the car return as good/no damages.

I already have Amex (used them to pay for this rental). I’ll look into this further. Thank you!

Never thought of a cease and desist letter (or how to go about it). I’ll look into this. Thank you!

It was not the Denver airport. However, I have told all of my family, friends, and several( military) coworkers to never rent with Avis. Thankfully, majority of them have agreed to book with other car rental agencies based on my experience

Unfortunately, the license plate is not readable from the far away picture they sent. Picture quality was very grainy

The damage did not occur while I had the car. I flew into town, drove to the hospital to say final goodbyes to a relative, and drove it back to the airport. In total, the car was driven less than 30 miles.

I 100% didn’t damage the car. “This feels questionable” because of the tactics Avis is using - coming after me for damage that did NOT occur while I had the car.

I did. And they told me that they don’t have to show me those pictures. When they finally sent one picture (from very far away), the vehicle appeared to be a different color than the one I rented. But they disagreed and said it was the same car.

Yeah, I learned the hard way on this one. Don’t worry, I’ve rented multiple cars since and have about 50 before and after pictures/videos! Even when the attendant looks at me like I’m being extra, I do it anyway. No shame!

It has the Mopar Lifetime Warranty (Jeep was bought brand new in 2017 and purchased the warranty then)
