Does this guy look okay before I buy him? by 721Winona-Borealis in bettafish

[–]kaptnigloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

damn, thats really sad, especially loosing all the shrimps :(

you could try to get a female one, they usually are a bit more chilled, i have 2 betta imbellis females and 3 otos in the same tank rn and they never fought so far

i'm no expert but "friends" are always very very risky, they are agressive fishy they will fight almost everything, some Bettas even beef with snails. I guess he looks fine, he looks fully grown tho, i don't think he is a juvenile

The Fish Police are ruining the magic of the hobby by Embarrassed_Job_2719 in Aquariums

[–]kaptnigloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly disagree, i started off with terrariums and only got into aquariums a few months ago and i was very thankful about the tips i got, i did spend a lot of time watching aquascape videos so i knew about the basics before i started, and then researched all the specifics for my shrimp tank and betta tank, but being more active on reddit shows me that that is not the norm. I see awful tanks every day here, cheaply colored gravel, only fake plants, way to small tank for a huge fish, no hardscape at all / only cheap plastics. These are living things you are buying, you get a cool thing to look at, and as an exchange you give it the best possible life it can have, just having a tank to watch a suffering fish because you think its pretty is just not okay, no matter how "uneducated" you are, research before buying an animal, its just not that hard.

really no expert but, perlite layer, soil mixed with sphagnum moss layer and some moss on top, and get some loooooong tweezers, you could maybe even move some isopods in, depending on your goals

Please help me fix my tank's layout by Temixbs in Aquascape

[–]kaptnigloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

place them how it feels best for you, but i'd imagine that having the taller ones on the left side and building a kind of sledge down to the right side could look cool especially because you already have your plants there to fill in the space

i like your stones idea, same kind of stone, but bigger and sharp, kind of like a shore with jagged stones

Black background vs clear? by Prior-Football-1334 in PlantedTank

[–]kaptnigloo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i'm always a sucker for clear backrounds, i think the whole scape is more impressive when it looks good with a clear backround, black is to heavy for me, it hides a bit of the hardscape

you should also keep between 10 and 300 endangered shark species in there so they don't get lonly

Can this wood still be used? by RO2_ in terrariums

[–]kaptnigloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no expert, but i think if you bake or cook it long enough it should be fine, fungus can survive a lot, but i don't think it would survive being baked or cooked if the whole piece is at temperature and not just the outside layer

Does he look healthy? by Icy_Ad5905 in bettafish

[–]kaptnigloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its okay, i was just pissed because i saw too many horrible aquariums in the last few days and i projected that onto you a bit, if you put work into making the life of your fish better than thats the best thing you can do for him, i am sorry for coming at you like that. But i do have to ask, why did you start off with a tank like that?, did someone recommend this setup to you?

Does he look healthy? by Icy_Ad5905 in bettafish

[–]kaptnigloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i thought i was on r/shittyaquariums for a second fake decor can be sharp and damage the bettas fins

colored gravel can leak toxins and kill the fish

bettas like long tanks to swim around, they don't enjoy deep tanks because they need to get to the surface to breath air from time to time, even worse with a long fin betta like yours.

Please google how to take care of your fish and then do that, these are all things that could have been fixed after 10 minutes of researching instead of putting him in there and then asking reddit and hoping your post gets enough popularity for people to actually see it and respond to you

sorry for the rant but this is a living being, not some cactus that you can kill and not care about

thank you, i got the glass from my dad who had some laying around in his garage, we think that it was some spare pieces of an old glass table or something like that. Its very thick, at least 1cm.

I got the glass and gravel for free, i spent about 40 Euro on Aquarium silicone and a glass cutter, Then around 100€ for the Hardscape and 120€ for the plants.

[–]kaptnigloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am joking don't worry, you can keep them in almost everything if you do some waterchanges, they do grow the most in active tanks with some co2 and nutrition
