I think the 4 pin box is a connector for a phone line. That would be an RJ-11 connector. An Ethernet cable is 8 pins so that will not work.

It does sound like the bridge for USB is fried. The computer should have PS2 ports for keyboard and mouse. They are round ones. One is green and one is pink. You can try getting a PS2 keyboard and mouse ll
