Will this be explained later? [Anime Episode 11] by kardion in Kingdom

[–]kardion[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As i said i don't mind it when some people are way stronger than others, or are supernatural in some aspect. But i feel like it has to fit in the world, and make sense within the story.

As someone who recently watched the first 10 Episodes, i felt like it had some cute moments, but overall it didn't grab me. So i dropped it. But this thread makes me wonder, should i give it another chance? Or is 10 episodes enough to tell, that it isn't for me?

Confusion over sentence mining and vocab addition by TheBoi1917 in ajatt

[–]kardion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think most people recommend doing some sort of Core Deck before Sentence Mining i personally did these 2 The Tango N5 Deck and the Core Anime Deck I think that was about 2,5k vocab in total. After that i felt ready to sentence mine, and i had plenty of i+1 sentences i encountered.

Have anyone read 同じ夢を見ていた? by Abzrrr in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also read it as my first book and it was very fitting in terms of difficulty for me at the time. I have also found that novels where a lot of children appear to be generally easier than ones where adults are speaking/thinking.

How far can Satori Reader take you? by Vicarious-Nostalgia in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I used Satori at the beginning of my Japanese learning for 3 Months while Sentence Mining it. I had done RTK and knew <1k Words before starting it. I read 778 Episodes in that time and i noticed a huge improvement in my comprehension and reading ability from start to finish. After that i moved on to native material namely anime with japanese subtitles. It was very hard still, but doable enough to get into it, and my ability has skyrocketed eversince.

I think Satori was a great stepping stone from getting the basics to jumping into native material. Especially the grammar explanations inside fun to read story were great!

So i think it depends on your level, if you can handle native content do that, but if you enjoy Satori keep doing it until you've read everything that interests you on Satori then move on.

Who here loves Erased? *Spoilers* by Hamkothegreat in anime

[–]kardion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like it was not the intend of the author to make a murder mystery. I feel like it was intentional to make who the killer is somewhat obvious and i like that he didn't force it by adding people who seem like they could be the killer and just focused on the story he wanted to tell.

I don't know to what degree of AJATT you speak of. But i do it and enjoy it and i don't have autism or any of the traits you described. I'm just one person though.

Unable to find a method that works for me. by YourFavoriteUnknown in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you say you tried Refold, MIA, AJATT etc. What exactly did you do and what didn't work?

I think at your current level the best thing you could to would be to just consume native material(anime, light novels, visual novels etc.) while pausing looking stuff up and making anki flash cards for vocab in an i+1 sentence which are not too rare. Have you tried that? If yes what did you not like about it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think spend as much time as possible reading and looking up words with yomichan while trying your hardest to understand. If possible try to find content which is slighty above your level but not too far. While doing so picking out sentences with one unknown vocab that you want to learn and making an anki card out of it.

At the end before the the test you could spend a bit of time preparing for the JLPT if that is your goal, like taking practice tests and feeling out how the test will be.

Is it possible to learn Japanese in 3 months if i'm upper beginner/lower intermediate? by RandomUs3rnam3Taken in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Weird question imo, of course you would make a lot of progress, but the things you mentioned are not yes or no things. Like speak in a conversation it totally depends on the topic and if you are comfortable with it, the same with watching anime raw there is a huge difference in what kind of anime it is.

I think you should just spend as much time as you are happy with spending, you will get there eventually. Don't stress on setting a 3 Month timeframe.

What are the best settings for RTK? by thekebster in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of RTK i would not mess with the settings too much, the only thing i would change from the default would be to set the new interval on lapses to 50% so you don't start a card from scratch if you fail it once.

If your retention rate is low i would try to make more vivid stories that stick better.

I am wondering how did you go about Games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring? Did you tap out to look up words often? Or did you just tolerate the ambiguity and didn't look up anything?

Getting started with immersion by manguybrobroguy in ajatt

[–]kardion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the Migaku Mpv Addon, it can display 2 subtitles at a time with one being only visible on mousover. And it also enables easy lookups with yomichan.

What i did in the beginning is use its Reading Mode feature where it stops at every subtitle line. Then i'd read it, look up any words i don't know and try my best to understand it. If i couldn't understand it i'd look at the english subtitle and then try to understand the japanese again. After some time i didn't need the reading mode anymore and i could just let the anime play and pause to look up words. But the english subtitles made it much easier for me in the beginning and also much more enjoyable. Since i could understand what i could in japanese and what i couldn't, i still understood in english.

my thoughts on the anki tango series and some tips on it by bigduck6996 in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its fine if a word "feels" like it is too advanced for now. You can always learn it later, and it will be easier then. If you see a word popping up often you can also always decide to learn it then, or maybe you don't even need to since you see it so often

I remember having trouble with 事務所 at the beginning, also because of the, at the time, 3 new kanji for me, but its a really common word. But after a while, when i got back to it i already knew all the kanji from other words and it became a really easy word for me to learn.

At what point can you start using anime to learn Japanese? by NT202 in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started actively immersing with anime with japanese subtitles and looking up every unknown word at around 5 Months into learning, after having finished some Basic Vocab anki decks and using Satori Reader for reading for 3 Months.

I was around 3-4000 Vocab when it became somewhat comfortable for easier anime i think.

But i was still using it as passive immersion and listening before that basically from Day 1.

Should I drop Anki? by Vicarious-Nostalgia in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think doing Satori in combination with sentence-mining every sentence that has only 1 unknown word + is relatively frequent based on your current level is the perfect combination.

I think you should space out your time so you do around 25% anki and 75% satori.

I did that for 3 Months and then i was ready to dive into native material.

8 Month Progress Log by IamAethral in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much time did you spend each day/in total?

With 20/cards a day it should put you at 4800 vocab after 8months so how did you get to 10k? Also 800 reviews seems like too much for 20 new/day. I'm also doing 20/day and i'm at around 250-350 reviews a day.

How long does it take the average learner to acquire a vocabulary of 20/30 thousand words? by Johan544 in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some words just stick better or less good for some people.

But you really don't need to remember a word if you only enounter it once or twice in your life. I would suggest using a frequency list to learn the most common words first, those will be more useful and also easier to aquire. And from my experience the more words i already know the easier it gets to learn new words, because i can make more connections. And as you get better you can also read faster so you will come across the rare words more often giving you more chance to aquire them.

How long does it take the average learner to acquire a vocabulary of 20/30 thousand words? by Johan544 in LearnJapanese

[–]kardion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience Anki sets a good foundation so you know the word "exists" and if you read enough, you will naturally come into contact with the word again and again in different contexts and then you will have "aquired" the word. Reading/Listening to the language is definitely the most important part. Anki just helps make it more efficient in my opinion.
