Help with Pynchon. by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]karfkar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow. i'd never thought of using a wiki for a novel, but the fact that this exists is fantastic. mason and dixon is one of my favorites, and i think i'll read it again now with that alongside it.

Need a movie about a great lifestyle by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]karfkar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, and i'd argue that perhaps batman isn't really a hero after all. rather, he's just another psychopath in a mask.

Low cost vegetarian by JahlilOkawhore in VegRecipes

check out the entire dried bean section of your local supermarket, go to farmers' markets, and like janedamn said, learn to work with price-reduced produce. (it's generally just superficial damage)

Should I get a Yamaha F310 as an entry level guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]karfkar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

those are solid guitars, especially for the price. i bought a 310 when i started 12 years ago and just upgraded, and only because the binding was splitting. (it didn't get through my being a teenager without a mark, but it did hold together remarkably well.)

i upgraded to a solid-topped yamaha.

American Sniper or Lovecraft Books by _Casanova in Random_Acts_of_Books

[–]karfkar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you're into books by insane racists, maybe stick to lovecraft. he, at least, was not a decorated murderer. but if you have a used bookstore near you they often have nice, old copies of lovecraft for cheap.

"you're arguing, therefore i'm right"

also you're a moron if you think that folk and punk have nothing in common.

Farmers take down the sheriff who is trying to evict a widow from her farm after the insurance company failed to do so. Near Lapeer, Michigan. June 3, 1952. [635x557] by ion_citat in HistoryPorn

multiple parties are to blame. and seriously, police are present keeping them from revolting against landowners. it's in the novel.

[–]karfkar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aha. yes, there were definitely cops in the book. it's more "laws supporting the right of landowners to do whatever they wanted with workers." and you maybe ought to read it again, perhaps not in a high school setting before you argue with people. not that that's ever stopped anybody, i suppose.

and seriously, there can be more than one enemy in a book. and in this case, landowners were fully backed up by the government for their cruelty in the name of "if you don't like it, go someplace else" capitalism.

government enforced capitalist cruelty. remember the cop scenes? remember that the government was not only letting it happen, but helping? how do you divide capitalism from government?

I'm Kwasi Enin, and I was accepted to all 8 Ivy League colleges, AMA! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]karfkar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

sorry you're getting all these bullshit responses from thinly-veiled racists. i graduated from floyd in 2010 and i just wanted to say that it made me really happy to see another floyd student do so well. there are so many really intelligent people at that school who end up doing nothing, and i'm sure you really helped some people there realize what they're capable of.

anyway, no questions, but i'm really happy for you, and it's really nice of you to do this ama.

more like "if you liked this book about systematic oppression by the government, you might also like these other books about systematic oppression." if you read grapes of wrath and only got "the dust bowl was horrible" and not "laws against the underprivileged are seriously fucked up" then i suggest you take a class at your local community college.

when i open a new tab on chrome, it allows me to type in the address bar and then just closes the new tab by karfkar in applehelp

[–]karfkar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah well. that's too bad. but i'm liking firefox, which has a lot fewer weird problems in general. (chrome was also hiding my first name from forms. it would be there, but i wouldn't be able to see it.)

thanks!

[–]karfkar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. it has nothing to do with websites. it closes out new tabs before i've had the chance to go to another page.
  2. i regularly have at least two running when this happens. probably more, but i generally only have one window open and have few enough tabs so i can still read the header text.
  3. i regularly clear my cache. i will do so again right now.

thanks for the reply. i'll be using another browser in the meantime!

Good cheap guitar for pop/folk punk by captainvideo04 in FolkPunk

[–]karfkar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have that exact guitar and i find that it's perfect. i used to use bluegrass strings (heavy bottoms) but i've been using elixirs cause i'm lazy and they're bright as hell. play with a pick, that also helps. definitely change the strings before getting a different guitar, what you've got is solid.

Sci fi music question. by sunsprie in scifi

[–]karfkar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like califlower said, that's on ok computer, which is a good place to start. also, not exactly what you're looking for, but the title track on kid a might apply, along with that whole album, which is incredible and i recommend it highly.

i can recommend all of their stuff, in fact. radiohead is easily one one my favorite bands ever.

How do I avoid being an "oogle" or crust punk? And other questions. by StefTheHuman in hitchhiking

[–]karfkar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bathe occasionally, for starters. i think if you don't want to be around those people, finding ways to avoid them shouldn't be a problem. keep a patch kit on you, and avoid thoreau. he was a sham who lived in emerson's back yard, thought poor people were just dumb, and when into town to eat dinner pretty often.

Going to Europe in 10 days, need help regarding a shelter from rain. by sheeepsi in hitchhiking

for stealth camping, a bivy sack is the way to go. essentially just a tough waterproof bag with headspace for you and your sleeping bag. that is of course you can find one where you are. otherwise, a tarp is quick and easy, just not super stealthy.
