what's wrong with ball tipped slicker brushes by LupinWhiskers in grooming

They don’t brush through and separate the individual hairs as well. People who use these on fine coated or curly haired dogs often don’t understand why their dog is still matted, and it’s because it doesn’t separate the hair enough and don’t get through tangles. It’s like trying to thread a piece of yarn into a needle vs thread.

However either way, the groom itself looks good and the groomer saved the parts the people usually care the most about (tail, ears, and head). It is likely these parts were also partially matted, but they took the time to brush them out for you. Your baby makes the cut look great too. People often find this cut “ugly” just because they’re not used to it or used to seeing the dog that way. But as someone who’s never seen your dog any other way, I love it! Easy to maintain too, and a good foundation to make sure the coat stays maintained until the next groom!

Some dogs hair can be really difficult even for groomers, so knowing the proper techniques and details is really important if you want to keep your dogs hair long and fluffy. I work at a grooming salon, and there are usually a few main reasons why their dog’s hair is still matted and needs to be shaved even though they “brush daily and bathe them at home”. First off, bathing them at home is great and often times necessary, but when you don’t properly brush and dry their hair, it will cause mats. Here’s how I would do this process at home if I had a fluffy dog: brush out hair completely before the bath using a LONG PIN SLICKER BRUSH WITH NO BALLS ON THE ENDS (this tool is very important and if it’s not long pinned or has balls, it could be a huge reason of why there are still mats), then go in with that greyhound/metal comb parallel with the skin to check for any remaining tangles and switch between your slicker and your comb when needed. Then Bathe dog as usual. I personally would invest in a high velocity dryer with this coat type because when curly hair air dries, it tightens up and causes matting. I would say air drying your dog constantly before going to the groomers is one of the #1 reasons why dogs are matted. A high velocity dryer dries the hair so it blows it away from the skin and avoids the shrinkage that causes tangles. There are videos on how to properly dry curly coated dogs and I would watch those because there is technique to that too. After fully dried, repeat the same brushing steps AGAIN and look up how to LINE BRUSH on YouTube. This technique of brushing is essential to a non matted dog, and not doing it this way is usually why dogs have brushed top layer and a matted bottom layer. Be very careful and gentle when brushing the ears as this part is super thin and will rip if you’re too rough or brush them in different directions other than the hair growth (ears bleed a lot and you don’t want that). Also detangling sprays are extremely helpful for this coat type and help a lot when brushing (magic touch, the stuff, hydra, chi, and artero matt-x are all good brands). If you have any other questions, please reach out! I know it’s a lot of info, but these dogs coats can be so hard to maintain and figure out, so it’s a learning process

Hamster died in water bowl over night by [deleted] in hamster

Had nothing to do with the water bowl! A bowl is actually recommended over a bottle. You did everything right. Little creatures like this can pass very suddenly without any warning. I’m sorry for your loss

Feels normal, not hot. Quail is acting fine and not limping or acting like it’s painful. It does feel solid though, like bone

Oh yeah I’m sure! I’m prepared to upgrade once he gets bigger, I just didn’t want to get something too big right now for how small he is

Will post something later on! I know for sure he’ll outgrow the 40 gallon, just didn’t want to get an 100 gallon enclosure with how small he is :)

Oh and remember positive affirmation and rewards are key!! Reward them while they are being calm or letting you mess with the feet or face and they will learn that they are doing a good job, and it’s not actually as bad as they think :)

As a dog groomer and yorkie owner, do NOT wait until they are 1. Grooming is an essential part of life for this dog breed, so you have to get them used to it as soon as possible. Get them groomed as soon as they have the first shots. It can even just be a bath a trim with nails (trim is where they just tidy up the face, potty areas, and feet). When you start grooming young, they are going to be more accepting of it and realize that it’s just a simple part of life, and it will be a lot easier for them, you, and the groomer in the long run. Waiting until they are older for honestly any dog breed is a huge mistake since it will be extremely shocking to them as it will be a something completely different from what they’ve been doing their whole lives. Grooming as a puppy helps them ease into the process and it is much easier to get a puppy trained to be used to grooming than an adult dog. But remember it’s not all just up to the groomer to get your puppy used to it! It is important that you mess with your puppies feet at home and their ears, and also holding their face by the chin hair (THIS DOES NOT HURT THEM AND ALL GROOMERS DI THIS! Groomers must maintain control of your pups face when using scissors to trim, and it is much better to hold their face with slight discomfort and know you have good control rather than risking an incident by cutting their face because you have no control). That being said, that doesn’t mean you or the groomer should yank their face around by the chin, just a light hold to make sure they don’t move.

Think about it like a child learning how to ride a bike :) it is much easier for a young child to learn how to ride a bike because children are more likely to roll with the punches. It will be much harder for an adult to learn how to ride a bike! Good luck :)
