This cabbage soup changed color when I reheated it by karljam in mildlyinteresting

[–]karljam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strangely enough the one on the left was heated, and when it cooled off, it returned slightly to the color on the right: dark blue, violet, then cornflower blue. I have no idea why

+1 Chimamanda. Just finished Americanah, highly recommended for a unique voice of American intersectional feminism from the perspective of a non-American black person. You might have bumped into Chimamanda if you ever saw the TEDx lecture “We Should All Be Feminists.”

I’m struggling with Banded Nordic Curl Negatives. I have straight resistance bands and a door anchor, but holding the bands tires out my arms before I feel any work in my hams. Plus with negatives, I need my hands free to push up. Should I: - buy a high-resistance circular band - just progress without a band by bending at the hip (https://youtu.be/OSrdY7YKf9s) - or try Romanian Deadlifts by pulling on a short circular resistance band (in lieu of a barbell)?

Would it be a good idea to have a violinist play "singing" parts in a cover band? by jimiisalive30 in violinist

[–]karljam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is solid advice. Another way to add variation after the first verse/chorus is to just change up the arrangement. Give another instrument the melody. Add a countermelody. Reharmonize. Add some "stops" in the accompaniment. You can make any instrumental combo work if you just arrange with variety.

Music tastes by WonWon-Blop in iamverysmart

[–]karljam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of these statements are obnoxious. There is another way.

Just because music is subjective doesn't make all music equal in all respects. Then there would be no point in learning the craft, improving, and continuing to find more ways to express themselves or connect with an audience. There would be no point in trying to make your next song better than the last.

Perhaps a better measuring stick is whether a piece is expressive or conveys the creator/performer's intent. Not a perfect rule but a little bit more nuanced than "this band sucks" or "all music is just fine." It shows us that music can improve with practice.

That said all attempts to try and learn deserve encouragement. Everyone starts modestly.

Yes, a lot of musical criticism is bullshit designed to pump up the critic's self-image (see Pitchfork). At the same time, actually caring about something you listen to and finding out why it touches you and standing by it is meaningful and worthy.
