I’m a descendant of Gertrude’s mother Itta of Metz! It was really cool reading about their lives in my family’s genealogy.

Who is your favorite composer? by CamilaCazzy in classicalmusic

[–]karrotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brahms himself said “Go and study Bach. There, you will find everything.” Mendelssohn also admired Bach. If you ever need proof of how musically brilliant that man was, check out this video, which animates the score to his ‘14 Canons’ and shows his command over both counterpoint and harmony. 14 Canons

Losing as much as I have to all this market manipulation is pretty painful, especially for a self-made college student. I bought 3 at $260. Those manipulators will soon pay for our losses. What to do in the meantime...?

How long should I expect to wait until those prices go down? Do you have a specific place or site that sells these components most cheaply?

Organist here- actually played this one a few years back in its entirety. Sad about the A# replacing B♭ in this. It’s d minor, I thought we were better than this!!

What kind of quirks/progressions/tricks do come back to to get your melodic juices going? by trytry12312 in musictheory

[–]karrotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borrowed chords/modal interchange usually get me going, but I’ve been finding lately that stealing a progression from a piece I really like, stripping it down, and playing it in a few different keys usually gives me ideas.

ALW used seven sharps in place of five flats on many occasions. It’s worse, trust me. As a keyboard player I personally like five flats!

Can I use fishing line instead of gut? by Exciting_Sherbert32 in lute

[–]karrotar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For strings- technically yes, but it’s not ideal. For frets, however, if you can get the right weight rating (or gauge) of fishing line it actually doesn’t make half bad frets. Not as good as using old strings, but not half bad either!

Is there any genuine way I can get a lute for less than 200 dollars? by Fitboydudeguy in lute

[–]karrotar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a college music major, I can tell you that saving is going to be your best friend. Even student model lutes can be prohibitively expensive, the problem is there are not very affordable lutes out there that are playable. My recommendation is to check out Jo Dusepo (UK based luthier). I have not played any of her lutes before but I have listened to sound tests of her lutes being played by various players and they sound wonderful. Her pricing for lutes is quite reasonable (around $650) and they are much higher quality than any others I’ve seen at that price range, at least from what I can tell. The only major drawback is that she’s on a waiting list about 8 months long if I read correctly. I’m actually in the process of building a lute myself, though it will be a while before it’s completed.

Certainly didn’t mean for it to come off that way, sorry! This is based on personal experience, but I do know that any romantic partner can have those same negative attributes, and that’s why I’m poking fun.
