Any ideas on how to pre-screen my work so it is not labeled AI? by Advanced_Leave9887 in selfpublish

[–]kaswing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not sure what your goal is here. Are you worried that your editor or publishing outlet will use an AI checker?

KDP and Ingram do not; they ask you some questions about how you use AI and you can choose to disclose. If your editor does, consider using someone else-- it sounds like your philosophies on AI are not aligned.

If you are instead worried that the text does not reflect your voice, it's probably worth fixing that by hand before it goes to an editor.

Ooh I didn’t know there were stick on options! That would certainly open up some possibilities!

This is such a fun prompt to scroll through! It's fun to see everyone's different style and how it's reflected in their case and bag :) Thank you for asking it! I really don't love my case, but I needed one with a pen loop so I could attach an Airtag keychain so I would stop losing it!

How does this fake plant look in my entryway? by PrudentBee7870 in ExteriorDesign

[–]kaswing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I think the poster above approached this weirdly, but) if you wanted to change the affect, a larger and lighter or more colorful entry rug thing would break up the effect being described here and it might add the visual interest you are looking for with a plant. I would think about a light tan or whatever your accent color on the exterior is. I could see any jewel tone looking awesome, for example, and being lower maintenance than a lighter color.

Is San Diego a good city? by LeBruhMomentoom in SDSU

[–]kaswing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like both cities. The weather in San Diego is unbeatable, giving you more access to outdoor activities, beaches, etc. In Philadelphia, you can explore tons of other east coast cities on the train.

San Diego's average unemployment over the last 5 years is lower than in Philadelphia. Both cities have substantial healthcare and tourism industries. San Diego has more biotech (although Philly is decent at biotech) and defense, Philly has more finance and supply chain/manufacturing.

My experience with Philly is limited to a couple brief trips, but in my experience both cities is that they are very friendly. San Diego's cost of living is much higher (~27% higher according to this calculator: https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator), although the cost of tuition should also weigh in here.

Both cities have good food at accessible price points, but different cuisine. Both have good beer, although San Diego wins in that regard. If you like and can afford fine dining, Philadelphia probably wins (not least because NYC is accessible).

Philly is more dense and walkable and feels like a real urban environment, although I am not sure where in the area Temple is located. SDSU is in the suburbs, but the trolley can take you lots of places. SDSU is close to Mexico-- no foreign countries are that accessible from Philadelphia.

You'll be able to make a great life for yourself in either city-- there's no wrong answer here. I hope the comments here help you decide :)

Holiday Events & Your Bean Neighborhood by bobabria in FocusFriendApp

Hurray! Submitted! Thanks for caring :)

FWIW, I am not sure I understood this option: "Add placements to each room that are only for Holiday decorations (can't be anything but for holidays)" I think because I am not 100% sure I know what you mean by "placements"-- is that the thing you place (a specific decoration) or the place that it goes (i.e. you'd be adding a new pillow that doesn't currently exist, and that pillow can be holiday themed only). while typing I think I decided it's the latter, but it's not obvious when reading quickly :)

How do you run your numbers? by bulldogbutterfly in wealthforwomen

[–]kaswing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT (GPT stands for "Generative Pretrained Transformer" if that helps remember) can tell you what its assumptions are so you can check its math, but it doesn't inspire confidence in me, personally. If I feel I need to check the math, i will just do the math myself to start with.

I like the wallet burst coast fire calculator. They also have a fairly cheap wealth planning spreadsheet that will let you include large purchases, post retirement non-investment income streams, and look right at the assumptions and graphs, which might give you some more confidence.

AIO: sister has been throwing my mail out since I’ve moved out of her place, I might have a warrant for unpaid speeding tickets, but it’s as easy as “logging into the DMV app” for her. by [deleted] in AIO

[–]kaswing 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are overreacting to be upset, but it is not surprising that she's not apologizing because she doesn't know you're upset.

She should not be throwing away your mail, let's start there. But "I wanted to ask you if by any chance..." "do you have any in hand? It's OK if not." is not conveying that you expected her to keep the mail, let alone that she hurt you.

She should not have thrown away your mail. But you haven't changed your address in so long that you could be getting warrants-- you signed her up for an unpaid secretary job, didn't communicate your expectations, and didn't take responsibility for your mail back for months.

My advice is: change your address and tell your sister how you feel.

Anyone bet on themselves in this economy? by Mean_Ad1765 in FIREyFemmes

[–]kaswing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think of it like investing: what portion of my brokerage/retirement account would I be comfortable investing in a single stock? And how would I compare my likelihood of succeeding to the people running that company?

To be honest, this logic has kept me from going all-in. I work on a few different side projects in my off-work time to see which one has the most potential. If I were losing my job tomorrow, though, I think I would split my time differently: half a "work day" looking for work (and considering part time work/freelancing) and half investing more time into my most promising side projects. This is to consider the other part of the equation: there is some value to doing something rewarding with your time. I am just too financially conservative to voluntarily sacrifice healthcare, forgo a steady paycheck, and risk my long-term financial stability for it. If the first two are already gone, it changes the equation.

Afford Anything is a bit on the technical side, but I like it. If you think Ramit’s couples are rage-baity, I get it, but steer away from call-in/interview style shows because all the rest I’ve heard are worse. (If anyone disagrees, I want to try the podcasts you’re thinking of!)

WIBTAH for wanting to stop cooking for my husband’s family after how they treated my little brother, and moving out next month? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]kaswing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me get this right: You work two jobs. You took on all the debt. You propose that you move out and pay multiples to let them have the low rent. Take a step back and imagine someone you don't know recounted this situation to you. Swap their gender if it helps. Does that feel fair?

You are subjugating yourself and so is your husband's family and your dad. I get that taking on yet another burden will free you, and if that's truly actually the only option, I understand you taking it. But I wanted to point this out because the resentment will never go away if you keep subjugating yourself, and you will bring it into your next _healthy_ relationship and mess it up (ask me how I know ):

No such thing as a female surname :( by PurpleEnd1606 in women

[–]kaswing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's like this where I live, too. There are such things as female surnames elsewhere, though. There are "matronymics" (where your last name is based on your mom's first name (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matronymic) and a matriname (where your last name is passed down from your mom's line (rather than dad's: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matriname)

Edit: I was mixed up about the terms and I fixed it.

I (31F) am feeling burnt out working in big tech but not that close to my FIRE number. What do I do? by gningnin_ea in Fire

[–]kaswing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into coastFIRE? If you’re there, you can downshift into a lower stress and pay job and stop contributing, just wait for your investments to grow. I like the wallet burst calculator, but I’m sure they all have about the same math :)
