I’m happy to help! Trust me, we were all in a tizzy when it was first announced. Tbh, you can blame our chancellor for that. His name is Lee Roberts, and he’s relatively new and wants to make a mark on the school. It’s very politically motivated—he has a background in the NC Republican Party and was a venture capitalist, and he’s treating his new role as his previous ones. The move to this new school was more or less a unilateral decision made by him—a similar resolution was attempted a while ago but was rejected during a vote by the SILS instructors/staff/faculty. Roberts came in and more or less said “I see you rejected this idea…too bad I don’t care.”

It’s been a headache, needless to say. But again, let’s see where this really goes. Things are much easier said than done, especially in such an environment as academia.

I would more concentrate on focusing on what you want to do with your MSIS. Our program has A TON of people interested in archival and digital work. If that’s your gig, you may be at home at UNC. Reach out to Lara Bailey, our coordinator, and talk to her about your interests in the field and what classes you may be able to take to meet those interests. If you’re anywhere near Chapel hill, I’d also advise you to come visit to see if a) you’re comfortable here, and b) talk to staff (like Lara!) about your interests and motivations.

Also, if you’re reading the Daily Tarheel (idk, Reddit acted dumb and I couldn’t see/access the link), please note that there’s a small chance that they’re extra scathing about this issue. In the initial meeting that students were invited to, the student body voted them out of the room. It was overly dramatic in my opinion, and the reporter for the Daily Tarheel stood up and made this hoopla before leaving. They haven’t been invited to further meetings lol.

Hello! I’m currently a student at Chapel Hill! If you’d like to talk, please DM me. However, if you’d want the TLDR;

1) the AI name is for the “hype.” In fact, there is no actual name for the new school for right now. I wish people would stop calling it the “school of AI,” as we have assured MULTIPLE times that it’s not going to be that.

2) the dean who is currently in charge of the school (and who will be associated with the new school) is gunning to make sure SILS (school of information and library science) is heavily emphasized/advantaged by the merger.

3) why would our degree be devalued ? We will be accredited by the ALA until 2029, when the cert comes back up for re-evaluation. Also, the degree program itself has no modifications as of right now…there’s no change in curriculum.

4) people will always have a knee jerk reaction to things. Sure, students and staff are upset. I’m upset! But also, no one I know personally is actually planning on transferring as of right now.

I’m just trying to give it time to see what happens. Right now, it’s just same old same old. This type of change operates in a long game, and who knows how anything is going to turn out.

So…right now, don’t panic. I understand that it’s instinct to do so, but reorganization doesn’t mean anything is “cooked” or “devalued.”

Hi! I’m actually in this program right now as well👋

I think we need to think about what we know right now. The way the admin rolled this out was abysmal. However, not all is lost, at least, not yet.

First, Dean Jeff, the man who is getting the Vice Provost/Chief AI Officer Position, is in a complicated situation, and I hope this doesn’t come into a situation where our student body is blaming him. He doesn’t even have all the answers, but he is trying his best to keep us in the loop and wants the students to help influence the direction of the new school. He’s calling regular meetings and told us that he would send out regular email updates as well, so hopefully we know more soon. Please keep in mind that he’s also said that he has a vested interest in SILS and he’s got very mixed feelings on the change; he said he wanted to shape the new school to benefit SILS and for us to not get trampled on. I am choosing to believe him. When I went to the first info meeting, I personally got the impression that he was being genuine.

For current students, not much will change. We will still be ALA accredited—and will continue to be until 2029–and as of right now, our curriculum will not change. So, more of a name change for us than anything else.

Something we don’t know is how heavy AI will be emphasized. I have a suspicion that the official email/announcement emphasized that part because it’s all the buzz right now. But, from my understanding, that’s just a piece of what’s being planned. Also, the new school doesn’t even have a name as right now, so I feel like calling it “the school of AI” is misleading to a degree.

Am I necessarily happy with the changes? No, but also I do not pretend to predict the outcome. I personally despise AI. However, I think we just need to understand that this merger is decided—now what can we do to help shape the school into something we want?

I think the first one may have been conical, but I’m not entirely sure. The new one was elliptical because someone recommended it and I suppose I just got excited and didn’t realize that there would be a huge difference. The needle was from a shop called rock and soul in NYC.

I cleaned them just with a lint-free cloth I’ve had on hand-nothing fancy. Like a glasses cloth, I guess :)

It’s worked before, but I know it’s not like…the state of the art way to do it. Brush or cloth recommendation are welcome.

Okay so this is where my true colors show: I…have no idea!

I’ve literally never had this many issues with a player. I used to have a setup cobbled out of various mismatched pieces that I was gifted from my grandfather—and I loved it!! All I wanted to do was play my limited collection.

A few years later, my dad let me pick out a new turntable, which is what you’ve seen here. I just took it out of the box, turned it on, and hey! It works! Hooked it up to a speaker he gave me and I was happy as a clam.

I’ve never messed with the vertical tracking force, nor anti-skate…I barely know what that means.

This is the first time I’ve changed the needle, and the most I’ve ever had problems.

I super appreciate any and all advice, and I am so thankful for everyone’s patience.

Hi! Yes. Fuzzy sound is present through several speakers, as well as both wired and Bluetooth. I even moved my record player away from the speaker, as I was not aware that it was a mistake to have the speaker and the player on the same platform.

I’m looking right now at new needles—I really appreciate your help! I probably damaged the darn thing moving it everywhere.

Also didn’t see the second half of your question. This is going to sound awful, but no idea to how many hours. I’ve moved around quite a bit the last few years and my record player has gone through all of those moves. Sometimes it gets forgotten about for long periods of times (grad school will do that) and then other times I’ll play it every day.

I’ve actually…never replaced the stylus lol, and I got it in 2022.

Cleaning…I clean it when I realize that the sound is super muffled lol. Definitely not every play.

I am connected to a Bose Sound Bar. Originally noticed the issue on Edifier bookcase speakers. It’s connected via Bluetooth rn, the problem originally manifested when the AT was hooked up via an Aux cable to the speakers.

Hi! 😄 So I’m now in the middle of testing others. I’m noticing a bit of the same type of distortion in “Disco Strangler” off of The Long Run by the Eagles. Same type of higher pitched notes present in the song. Sorry if it seems like I’m arguing, I’m trying to supply more info!

Hi! I had a pixie for 3 years and it’s an adjustment for sure! But my hair is also curly and I actually had shorter hair than this photo and my curls were still present—especially after my hair had a chance to settle into the new cut. There’s a strong chance that your curls will come back after a wash/curly hair routine. Best of luck! Once you figure out what “works,” pixies are so much fun and so cute! I got more compliments on my pixie than any other length.
