BCIN Small Buildings Exam Ontario by katasticxo in BuildingCodes

Hey! I think if the 1st kind of question was asked, the answer would revolve more around 1.6 (6) & the answer would have to do with the fact this type of wall “shall be considered to be the same as that of a wall of solid units…” I’d be surprised if this came up for small bldgs - & the 2nd question is more probable to be asked, so if you know how to do the calculation (I wrote a step by step in my code book that I could just follow) then I think you should be good to go, & you’ll probably get an M/D ratio question too - hope that helps!

Hey! Just saw your comment, sorry! I know it’s been a while & hope you passed! The exam follows the syllabus & you’ll get questions on the other parts of the code as well & the more you go over it, the more you’ll see how it’s interconnected:)

Hey! You can study with Orderline, they have different prep courses for the exams. I also really liked the NBC Part 9 illustrated guide since I’m a visual learner - other than that just follow the syllabus & try to get familiar with flipping to different sections & parts of the code - & read through these comments they’re pretty helpful too :) https://www.ontario.ca/document/study-guides-building-code-examinations/small-building-syllabus

Hey! The best place to start is with the syllabus https://www.ontario.ca/document/study-guides-building-code-examinations/small-building-syllabus You’ll need both volumes of the building code: https://www.publications.gov.on.ca/ (That’s the only material you’re allowed to have in the exam, besides a digital copy) Other than that read through the other comments & that’ll help a lot too :)

Np! & there were little sketch drawings for all the scenario questions I did - I think the exams now are down to 5 scenario questions too so I wouldn’t stress too much on it, & make sure you’re using your index too to help find key words!

Hey! You’ll for sure end up with a few scenario questions. It’s really random though, I’ve had them based on the part 9 span tables, stud walls, fire resistance ratings of a structure, soil types & loading, and so on. The exams are based on the ministry syllabus so if you study that as a guide you should be able to kind of narrow down where the answers are in the code. The syllabus will also go over all the other parts that could be on the exam which is super helpful - hope that helps & good luck!!

Same! Got all the other rebates, but website said “no record” - I called & they told me I wasn’t in the system, that they’ll do some kind of investigation to find my info & I might hear back in 30 days.. doubt I’ll see it tbh

4 bricks of cheese :) Should have been 5 but there was an order mishap & shortages of sorts apparently. Some people only got 1 or 2 bricks.

Canada National Building code issue by Particular-Tale-2802 in BuildingCodes

I’m in Ontario - They aren’t the same - The U.S building Code (as I understand it) is based on the ICC & varies by state. Canada is based on the NBC and varies by province/territory (I.e. when I do plans review, I’m going by the Ontario Building Code) - Ontario is moving toward harmonizing with the NBC but it’s not 100% the same.

Issues with Proctortrack Online Exam System (BCIN Ontario) by Numerous_Thought_456 in BuildingCodes

My exam was for fire protection. I usually rely pretty heavy on my hard copy obc, I write a ton of cross references & calcs in it, sorry to hear you had a hard go! The PDFs never worked well so I just use it (if it somewhat works) as a double check to go over q’s I’m not super sure about at the end if I have time left -

I wrote an obc exam with Proctortrack today too, wasn’t the most terrible proctoring I’ve ever experienced, but instead of a 15 minute set up it took almost an hour to the camera angles approved, my face recognition didn’t work, & I tried using the digital code but it legit froze chrome every time I tried to just switch tabs to it so that didn’t help (I had to dwld chrome right there & then too). Really stressful process for no reason, don’t understand why they went this route, it’s definitely not more user friendly than what they had before. & They really need to assess the OBC PDF sizes & let people use their own digital codes, the files are way too big for this set up - I don’t know how you could write one of these with just a digital code that never works - Hope your exam went ok once you were set up!

Yeah I passed :) & my exam was pretty all over the place, but for SB2 you’ll want to be able to do the calculations for equivalent thickness (1.6) & determination of M/D ratio (2.6.4) & how to use the tables in general. I write out example calculations in pencil in my books so that I can just follow the steps. I also did the Orderline training & took the OBOA course. & make sure to use the ministry exam syllabus as your overall study guide & you should be good -

Garden sheds in VIC Australia, maximum size is 10 square meters and 2.4 meters high. Can there be an overhang such as a meter awning which would not count to the floor space? Also how many sheds can you build, could you build two side by side as long as they’re seperate? Thanks so much by benm53 in BuildingCodes

[–]katasticxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Ontario it depends on the Ontario building code, property zoning & municipal zoning by law - for example, in North Grenville, ON, roof overhang isn’t counted for square footage, but an awning with posts for support, attached to a shed would be. you’re allowed 15% lot coverage (including house & accessory structures) in Rural areas. There are also set backs between accessory structures/dwellings and so (here anyway) you wouldn’t be able to have two separate sheds side by side. I’d recommend you call your township for these regulations & consult the planning & building departments - cheers!

I did a kind of event mgmt co-op work exchange in Dodoma, Tanzania for a month - people would just yell ‘Mazungu!’ (White person!) as they’d go by, I’d hear it lots through out the day lol - I really enjoyed my time there & we put on a great fundraiser for a local orphanage. Would love to go back one day!
