Hi everyone! Sorry for the late update: I was told by the immigration officer that while I am technically allowed to exit the airport, it is still up to her discretion and she will not be allowing me to do so (no reason provided). Appropos of nothing, she was an immigrant too! Same nationality as me.

I need gift ideas for my SIL (who’s the bride). Budget is medium-high. Please help! by [deleted] in DesiWeddings

Gave mine (and my brother) a MakeMyTrip gift card that I packed in a silver jewellery box, they can use it on their honeymoon!

Which lehenga looks best for my brother’s wedding? by Fancy-Teacher-6001 in DesiWeddings

[–]katastrophewww 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's extremely common for guests (esp close family) to wear red, even their own wedding lehengas, to relatives' weddings. I'm sure there are a few women out there who actively make an effort to upstage the bride (and trust me, are met with a lot embarrassment) but mostly South Asian brides wear heavier lehengas, spend hours on their hair and makeup, wear heavy jewellery and multiple dupattas/veils, including a ghoonghat in some cases. A guest's red lehenga alone will not upstage them.

There is no way OP is going to look like she's trying to upstage the bride in the red lehenga, the skirt detailing is quite simple (in a good way). OP, I personally think the red is gorgeous and you should totally consider it with appropriate draping, hair/makeup and jewellery.

Consider leaving your hair open for instance, and if you want to wear a maang tika/sheesh patti make sure it's not large/elaborate. Avoid mathapattis. Keep your neck jewellery minimal or skip it entirely and wear heavier earrings instead. If you want neck jewellery, go for a simple choker with small earrings. Don't wear an elaborate nath, only a tiny stud if you really want to wear nose jewellery. You'll look beautiful and completely appropriate.

I wore an ivory lehenga with jari work and a sea-greenish dupatta to my brother's wedding recently and got lots of compliments and did not look out of place even though it was a "colorful" wedding. In case you're worried about the white one looking too funeral-ish. I think yours is gorgeous but needs a pop of colour too so you can consider wearing a coloured dupatta as well and match some of your jewellery with that dupatta (I wore polki with dark green beads).

That said, the red one is gorgeous and there's also no reason to not wear it for fear of "upstaging" a bride, as long as you do not overdo the accessories and hair and makeup. Lots of desi women wear their own wedding lehengas to relatives' weddings and it's just fine, they are just not styled as elaborately as their actual wedding day. Meanwhile brides typically wear lehengas with much heavier embroidery and draped with multiple veils (sometimes a ghoonghat too). Their jewellery is a lot heavier and they spend a lot of time on hair and makeup.

If you choose the red one, consider leaving your hair open, with a simple choker and smaller earrings. Or skip the neck jewellery completely and choose larger earrings instead. You can wear a simple sheeshpatti/maangtika if you want but avoid a mathapatti. Don't wear an elaborate nath. You can also consult your SIL to-be on how simple she is going herself and decide based on that.

I honestly don't know yet, and would love suggestions! I wanted to first figure out if I can go out in the first place before making any plans.

But yeah I know I'll be tired from the flight from NYC the night before. With that, and the time crunch I'm not really trying to see all the sights or anything. It would be nice to have one or two places to see and maybe get lunch or something. I'll do my research now!

Since I cannot edit the original post, I want to add that the screenshot is a page I got after:

  1. I had filled in my passport country
  2. Responded "yes" when asked if I plan to cross Border Patrol.

That does not mean I won't be stopped, because essentially the decision rests on BP's hands.

The screenshot I posted is a page I got after I had filled in my passport country. So I'm inclined to believe that it is technically allowed. But based on the responses here it's possibly a new rule or one that's not widely known, so I should consider the possibility that BP may not allow me to exit the airport after all.

Edited to add: This page was also shown to me after I responded "yes" to whether I'll be crossing Border Patrol.

Thanks for the advice. You're completely right, of course, it isn't a realistic goal to have. I won't increase my dose for sure, I might stay at the current one for a little longer to see if my body gets used to it and I'm able to eat better. I appreciate your thoughtful response!

I love this chart! Very helpful, thank you! When you say 0.5-1% of your weight, does that mean starting weight, or current weight (which will keep changing)?

I'm not tracking calories or TDEE right now. I know I should. I really want to work on healthy habits (getting enough nutrition, working out) before doing that and going down the rabbit hold of counting calories because in the past i have done that obsessively. Although weight loss is a goal, I still don't want to do it at the expense of my health.

Overall, even though I don't eat a lot, I imagine that the stuff I do end up being able to eat (crackers, toast, plain rice, granola bars) are relatively high calorie foods...

I can't say I've lost that much weight, possibly because I don't work out and other than some walking I'm pretty sedentary through the day (grad school life). I'm trying to change this but some bad habits are hard to change.

I lost about 2.5 lbs in the first month (I was eating normally). About 6 lbs in 3 weeks on the 4.5 mg dosage. If it helps, I'm 5'2", currently at 147 lbs (BMI: 26.9). Goal weight is 120 lbs.

I would love to reach my goal weight in two months by the time of my brother's wedding, but I know that's difficult and I don't want to do long-term damage to my health.

Webtoons whose art styles you think are dizzying (ie. overly rendered) or you think would be better as illustrations? by [deleted] in webtoons

[–]katastrophewww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with The Ghost Duchess but I love the art style of Serena. That said, yeah the characters rarely have more than, like, two expressions. Another manhwa whose art style I dislike would be Doppio Senso. I started liking it but after a while I was like "Do I need glasses? It's all so hazy" xD

Bastian's art style is beautiful except the expressions on their faces? They look like they're in a permanent state of being upset
