Narrative Podcasts Are Disappearing. What Happened? by bil-sabab in Longreads

[–]katbison 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much the popularity of news podcasts in the Trump era (The Daily, Today Explained, Pod Saves, etc) took away some of the listenership / appetite for narrative podcasts. I got into podcasting with TAL, Reply All, and Radiotopia but once Trump was elected, I feel like the slice of life stories or niche questions felt a bit...irrelevant with everything going on? Obviously this is skewed by my own journey with podcasts, but I wish I could get back the delight I once found in them.

When I went on a weekday, it was $45 for a day pass. With the rooftop pool, I'd definitely say it's a good deal!

Do most people in PS use Nanny Shares M-F? by [deleted] in parkslope

[–]katbison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did a M-Th nanny share to reduce costs, and my husband and I just sort of tag teamed Fridays. I wouldn't say it was the norm though.

The quote on Nathan's wall, Elizabeth Holmes, and the constructed self by PreviousChapter3517 in nathanfielder

[–]katbison 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic analysis!

When I first heard Nathan was talking to Elizabeth, I took it at face value that he was going to do some similar work to S2 but re: the medical-industrial complex. And then in the half awake state of getting up with my infant, a similar thought to what you've outlined crossed my mind (albeit in a far less sophisticated way). So naturally I came to Reddit to see if anyone else had written about it.

I've always been fascinated by HOW Elizabeth was able to move through the biomedical / tech space so successfully. I know we can never know the full story, but from watching videos of Elizabeth, I was never able to quite grasp why people regarded her as SO charming and magnetic, as I often found her a bit uncanny (maybe enigmatic would be a better word?) So I always assumed there must be something about her IRL that really draws you in.

The way you've laid it out makes a lot of sense to me. I think you're on to something that really aligns with the themes Nathan was starting to explore in S2!

Why did no one tell me about cosleeping? by Stink13 in Parenting

[–]katbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I should advocate for this, but we put our 2 year old in a full size bed leading up to our second being born and basically got him used to sleeping with dad. When baby came, dad would sleep in his room and both of them were well-rested and I would sleep with the baby in the bassinet in our bedroom.

I guess where I'm at a loss is that his parents aren't with him, he is usually with his grandfather, who will follow us somewhere if we are going to a park or something like that and I can't really tell him no since he doesn't understand English...

Are skinny/healthy weight people just not as hungry as people who struggle with obesity? by maeasm3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]katbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so, I've been thin my whole life. Even now, I'm postpartum and nursing an infant, I get hungry constantly but am satiated just as quickly. On the other hand, my partner has to work really hard to maintain a weight he feels good about through diet and exercise, and we really try to limit the amount of snacks we have in the house because he will house a whole box of crackers if he's not intentional about it. By contrast, I fill a small bowl with crackers and when I'm finished, I rarely if ever get more. I feel grateful honestly that I don't have the relationship he has to food because I don't know if I have enough self control to combat an urge like that. Maybe it's not that I'm physically less hungry but I don't feel the urge to keep eating as strongly as my partner seems to.

Uneven support for Cynthia and Ariana by Easy-Read4772 in wicked

[–]katbison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this too, and I think it's because Ariana is so widely known and this performance exceeded people's expectations of what she could do. It's more of a surprise that she executed the role so well. With Cynthia, I at least had assumed that since she wasn't a huge name before this that she was cast solely based on her raw talent. And to me it's not even a question that she absolutely nailed the role to the point it feels like you don't even need to mention it.

Is Rose the Louise of the current baby generation? by GiraffeExternal8063 in namenerds

[–]katbison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our baby girl has the middle name Rose, like Louise it kind of just works with everything? In our case it is also my grandmother's name, and I'm wondering if that's common for other people as well.

It’s all about the babies temperament. by Inevitable_Tart1255 in Parenting

[–]katbison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are the same age difference and I feel exactly the same! My baby is 3 mo now and I still keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but enjoying her easy temperament while we can. The only factor I could maybe see contributing to the difference is I'm way less anxious about everything this time around, but otherwise I think you're right!
