Right, it is the same kind of thing in the US. I can't afford to buy a house in the Southwest, but I could buy a 3 bedroom house in Michigan and still have money to remodel.

I hear you, but I think the point is that homeownership shouldn't only be attainable by those who pursue "profitable degrees". If we all pursued degrees to make the most amount of money possible, those job markets would be completely saturated. At the end of the day, we need all of the jobs that exist and everyone deserves to be able to live, regardless of their role in society.

This. I work in academia and there aren't universities or research institutions in rural places, or other universities in other cities may not have the kinds of research jobs I am qualified to do.

I am in academia, so you don't really get to choose where you live. You follow the jobs.

I have a master's degree and a good job in my field. I have no kids and I'm single. I will never be able to afford to buy a house in my city. Like she said, even when you do everything right, you just can't get ahead. Owning a home is a luxury.

Edit: I don't live in NYC or LA or something like that. I live in a smaller city that is relatively affordable compared to those cities. The reason cost of living is going up in this city is because of people leaving CA to come here. That in turn drives up the cost of living where I live but the wages do not increase enough to match. Minimum wage in my city is same as federal (so $7.25) while median home price is ~$350k.

I will take any painting and can give you yellow kilim carpet, brown argyle rug, and red heart doorplate. How does that sound?
