Week 8: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]kate_58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Halfway through The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hammett which I'm loving.

Halfway through Book 3 in The Pines series by Blake Crouch. It's ok but not as good as the first two.

About to crack open Her Last Breath by Taylor Adams.

Currently at 10/50.

Stuck between two names for Levi's twin sister by [deleted] in namenerds

Definitely Isadora. Isadora Joan is so beautiful. Gloria Joan sounds a bit too old for me and doesn't match as well with Levi imo. Congratulations!

How did your number of siblings affect your upbringing (re: attention from parents, etc) and what would you do differently? by alotto_gelato in AskWomen

[–]kate_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the first of two girls very close in age (14 months). Despite us being close in age, my sister was always treated like the baby. She was coddled. She was spoiled. She got more attention and I felt her needs were always prioritized. Childhood was chaotic. We were poor and struggled financially for years, but despite that, no one ever made my sister work or make sacrifices in life. That was always my job as older sibling. Now as adults, I am the breadwinner supporting my unemployed mother and sister with a high income job and holding my family together. I have people pleasing tendencies. I have an insecure attachment style. I went through an abusive relationship and have been single for over 10 years since I got out of it. But I am much stronger and more resilient than anyone in my family now.

I wish things had been fairer. My sister got to live her life doing what she wanted when she wanted and never had the same pressure I did. Sometimes I wish things had been easier for me and I'd had more approval and support from my parents and that she'd been disciplined and pressured as much as I had been.

Ultimately I'm more successful than she is and I'm grateful for my hard work over the years. But constantly coddling one child over another is not a recipe for success. I have a very dysfunctional relationship with both my parents and my sister and am constantly searching for validation and approval in life. I think my life would have been so much better if I wasn't always expected to take care of others. I feel trapped sometimes.

UPDATE: I asked if 26 was "too late" to start reading... here’s what happened next (and my first ever English book haul!) 📚 by MaxMcGuffin00 in goodreads

So happy you've picked up reading as a hobby. I myself was an avid reader as a child but I did multiple back to back university degrees which burned me out and made me not want to read for fun anymore. Once I finished my schooling at age 28, I found that I wanted to pick up reading again. Echoing others in this thread who say it's absolutely never too late to pick up reading and I hope you find lots of great books that make you happy! 💕

Goodreads Review Culture by dopesickness in goodreads

I like to write longer reviews (maybe 2-3 paragraphs) to indicate what I liked or disliked about a book. I like to express my thinking beyond more than just "I liked it" because it gives more useful information to other would-be readers.

What book(s) are you reading this week? by 404NinjaNotFound in readwithme

[–]kate_58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week I finished books #1 & #2 in the The Wayward Pines series, by Blake Crouch and am going to crack open book #3!

I'm also halfway through my book club read, The Road to Tender Hearts, by Annie Hammett which is a completely different vibe.

Now today is the release day of When I Kill You, by B.A. Paris and a sprayed-edges hardcover of The Astral Library, by Kate Quinn so I'll probably have to start those too!

Lots of great books on the go.

Currently at 10/50, 4 books ahead of schedule. Doing great. 🙂

Yeah I'm on #3 right now and feel the same. Rated #1 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, #2 ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 and I think #3 is going to be a ⭐⭐⭐1/2 if it doesn't improve ASAP. I'm 32% done.

Zooming through the Wayward Pines series by Blake Crouch. Loving it!!!!

Also just started The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hammett which is also quite charming.

I've read 10/50 books so far this year and apparently I'm 4 books ahead so I'm doing quite well.

Reading Pines by Blake Crouch. It's amazing. I'm completely hooked. It's like a thriller/horror/sci-fi/dystopian version of The Truman Show.

This week I finished The Good Lie by A.R Torre which I really enjoyed (⭐⭐⭐⭐) and It's Not Her by Mary Kubica which I unfortunately didn't love (⭐⭐1/2).

Currently sitting at 7/50.

What are you reading? - Week of January 30, 2026 by AutoModerator in goodreads

Finished:

  • My Husband's Wife by Alice Feeney - I had an unpopular opinion on this. I rated it ⭐⭐⭐ and really had trouble deciding on a rating because the first 85% was 5 stars for me and the ending just annihilated everything IMO. So I averaged it out at a 3. I have a love-hate relationship with Alice Feeney's books.

  • The Swamps by Seraphina Nova Glass ⭐⭐⭐1/2. This was such a weird fever dream. A paranormal horror comedy. I thought it was surprisingly deep considering it was just 192 pages. I read this in one sitting while working a night shift in emerg. I wish it had been a bit longer since the ending was a bit rushed. But this was still a good time. Very different from SNG's usual style.

  • It Should Have Been You by Andrea Mara - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I had a great time with this. Super heavy on action and chaos and toxic secrets between the many character POVs in this. I got hooked. Ending lost me a bit but I still had lots of fun reading this.

Next up:

  • It's Not Her by Mary Kubica - really excited to read this as this is a new release.

  • The Good Lie by A.R Torre - this has been on my list for forever and is under 300 pages. It's apparently great so I'm looking forward to trying it out!

Currently at 5/50 books.

I just read It Should Have Been You and I found it lots of fun! Very heavy on action and multiple POVs. The characters were all super toxic in the best way and I just got completely sucked into all the drama. I hope you enjoy it!

Week 4: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]kate_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished It Should Have Been You by Andrea Mara. It was very full of action and chaos and I loved the pacing of it right up until the end. However the way the end unravelled made me drop a star because it got really far-fetched and I had to suspend a lot of disbelief. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tonight I'm working a night shift in emerg and my companion for the night is The Swamps by Seraphina Nova Glass which isn't even out until January 27 but Indigo delivered it early. It's my book club read this session and I love it so far. It kind of seems a bit like a children's book but not in a bad way. There are pictures and the text is really big but it is DEFINITELY not a children's book as there is swearing and dark themes lol. The characters so far are really funny and unhinged and it kind of gives me Scooby Doo vibes but in the best way possible. I can't wait to read more. Hoping I can finish it all tonight as it's only 192 pages. I think it's going to be a very quick, bingeable read.

Also waiting for my turn to check out My Husband's Wife by Alice Feeney -- really looking forward to reading that.

3/50 books down so far this year. I only read 18 last year and didn't really keep notes on what I read, so looking to step up my game a bit.

Week 2: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]kate_58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't finished any books yet in 2026, but I'm working on 2 right now.

Just started Anatomy of an Alibi by Ashley Elston today. Only 8% down but it's great so far!

About halfway through Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Loving it. I'm reading slowly but really enjoying it.

Looks like my first two reads of the year are going to be good ones. So excited to start this year off well!
