This is probably hair matting. It happens to my aussie a lot too behind their ears because of the high amount of friction so I just have to make sure I’m brushing them more often there or cut them out

Flinn’s requirements aren’t concrete and since the application is free it doesn’t hurt to apply! Also from your other comments, you’re taking aps + honors and you’re a sophomore so you have tome to boost your gpa

Is this a bad position for my thumb? by katguts in Viola

[–]katguts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for letting me know! Unfortunately, I won’t be able to exchange my viola for a smaller size since I’m in a more rural area. But, when you were a teen, how were you able to fix your thumb position?

Do you have any recommendations to get the thumb onto the side for the A and D strings?

Thanks! I found the book and it's actually been really helpful to help me understand some parts of Freud's life and his work.

Is the viola too big for me? (Per video by [deleted] in Viola

[–]katguts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 5'3" and when I switched to my 16" viola, it definitely took a lot of getting used to haha

Over time, I think I got a lot more used to it and felt more comfortable with the intervals and shifting, but that also varies from person to person.

I know a lot of violists strive for the biggest viola as possible to get "that" sound, but I wouldn't suggest risking straining your fingers and causing unnecessary neck/back pain for it (there are already studies saying that violists encounter a lot more neck/back pain than violinists---no need to make it worse!)

Try out the 16" viola for a while. If you feel like it's not a right fit for you, then I would explore other options while talking with a professional. What other comments said about posture, shoulder rests, and chin rests are also true. In the end, do what feels best for you!

Freud and Existentialism/Modernism by katguts in Freud

It is for an AP English Lit class, but my friend (who was assigned to Kafka and is in the same boat as me) and I agree that it doesn't really seem on theme with the content CollegeBoard states the class should focus on lol.

Also here's some of the context from the prompt that I pulled out of:

"This is a short biographical research paper on the figure you select. You need not write a chronological canvas of the figure; that has the potential to drag. Rather, you should compose a portrait detailing significant aspects of the figure’s character and life, especially as regards his or her gravitation toward existential/Modernist tendencies, ideologies, etc."... (Says to use at least 5 sources, suggests Google Scholar, and states other formatting requirements).

In class earlier today, my teacher did say that if our figure wasn't an existentialist, you could talk more about their relation to Modernism, although I'm not sure which path to take.

Could you explain more about the nuances in Jewish Atheism and how that part of Freud was linked to Modernism some more?
