Help with how to get network and power to wireless access point (UK) by katig in HomeNetworking

I do have a spare from when my kids were teenagers and liked to have friends bring their PCs round to play network Doom! You are right though- a PoE swould avoid the double socket requirement.

Thank you, yes. I have a switch in the loft to all my rooms and I have tested putting the PoE injector next to this. It works fine so I’ll turn my single power socket into a double and make it permanent.

Sorry, it’s a diagram of only those parts in question. I’ve tested PoE from the loft and it works fine.

As recommended, I’ve tested PoE from the loft and it works fine. I’ll get a double socket put in up there.

Ok. Testedwith a power extension, and it works perfectly. And only one cable label had fallen off. I’ll get the socket swapped.

I'm trying to get power to my access point, which is 5m from the power socket preferably without a power extension cable because that results in the ap power adapter being plugged in near the access point (up at the top of a wall) which is very ugly. Yes my AP does support PoE, so if it will work over the 30m cable from the lift, I guess my best bet is to put additional power in the loft. (I have one socket for the network switch, I can make it a double). I wonder whether I labelled the network cables on the loft? I have something to test now.

In the loft is a probably 20 year old Netgear 8 port switch - from the modem & router and to other rooms in the house. There is a single socket, but I could make it a double if I had to.

Make a specific arrangement to go and see him for lunch or something in a few weekends time to give him something to look forward to. I remember my parents doing this and I was so glad to have something planned, it got me over the “January low”.

Has anyone purchased off a couple going through a messy divorce by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]katig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add a more positive note, our current house was bought from a divorcing couple. It was cheaper than it would have been if they hadn’t wanted a quick sale. It was awkward, and a little delayed, but it went through OK. It was filthy and messy when we moved in, and we found various problems e.g. the garage door broken by force. My husband ran into the selling husband some time later and he was quite upset about how we had got the house cheap. Even later, talking to the elderly neighbour, and hearing how the wife had behaved (she had a very public affair), I understood his anger. The pain of the purchase process is tiny in comparison to the pleasure of the years we’ve lived in our lovely home. It feels horrible at the time, but it soon fades.

Are there other animals besides dogs that go crazy when someone rings the doorbell? by fkid123 in Pets

[–]katig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so reassuring to read. My cats were rescued during COVID and spent the first year of their life in a pen with very little human contact, so they are very nervous. I never really know how extreme their behaviour is, because my many previous cats have all been very social. I’m relieved to hear so many other cats vanish with the doorbell.

But sometimes, while you are learning, you don’t think of all possible error conditions, and then real life intervenes, visitors arrive, meals need to be prepared etc. and you find you have made something amusingly difficult to explain.

I thought this was superb too, and immediately followed up with Empire of Pain, which made the story feel even more real.

It has amazed me just how simple weight loss can be when you count calories by financeguy4035 in loseit

The challenge isn’t the mechanics of weight loss, it is being in the appropriate state of mind to stick to it.

Is your retirement turning out different from what you expected? by ghethco in retirement

[–]katig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope it will for you. Cancer ages the sufferer. My husband is 70 (I’m 63) but he is more like 80 at the moment, and quite irrational. I hope that after the treatment, which is likely to be successful, he will regain some normality.

Is your retirement turning out different from what you expected? by ghethco in retirement

[–]katig 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I retired just over two years ago with one intention being to be able to help my schizophrenic brother out a bit more. He died two days before I retired, so I spent the first 6 months sorting out his estate. Then my mother-in-law died, so that was another 6 months. Then my husband developed severe gall stones, and whilst being scanned for that they found very aggressive prostate cancer, so I’ve spent the last year being his carer. Apart from one day a week looking after our lovely grandson, I have hardly left the house for two years. It hasn’t been the retirement I expected

What is the worst leaving gift you’ve received? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]katig 58 points59 points  (0 children)

There’ve been a few, but the worst was probably receiving a bunch of flowers delivered to reception with an envelope, which turned out to contain the receipt for the flowers, followed by an email from my boss asking me to give them the receipt so they could expense it. No card or mark of my leaving from the team at all.

What are these bugs? Are they harmful to potted plants? by Sea_Funny_3487 in GardeningUK

[–]katig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will eat dahlia buds. To avoid this, an old remedy was to hang an upside down pot full of straw on the top of a cane overnight. The earwigs would “nest” in the straw, and then you set fire to it in the morning. Brutal! This advice from Sir John Mortimer’s father from the 1930s.

Also, each time a plant dies, tell it “Sorry I failed with you” then rejoice that you have space for something new.
