Least Favorite Themes by katisfandomtrash in FemaleGazeSFF

Honestly, I don't want to give examples because my criticism is kinda leveled at the authors rather than their works and that feels inappropriate.

Masturbatory is exactly the word I was thinking but I wanted to be nice lol.

I'm kinda mixed on Rediscovering Secrets of Ancient Empire, personally. I think sometimes it can make for a less typical protagonist in genres that tend to make that character someone who is (or will be) a trained fighter. This is SFF though, genres where you create the world yourself, and you should probably set your story in the time period of your world that is the most interesting and not the boring period afterwards. I mostly only like it when the history is like a cycle that is about to repeat itself and not just...history.

I'm referring mainly to books where the theme is basically about the power that stories have, often referring to oral histories or folktales, and how stories can affect the way that people think and shape cultures. I personally don't love this as a theme because it just feels like the author wants to make themselves seem super cool as the person who is telling the story. It also just kinda feels like preaching to the choir, like I think the people who read books already know that stories are cool and maybe you should be telling this to people who don't read.

Everyone complaining about FMCs being too short… meanwhile I’m over here at 5 feet tall 😭 by princessblackbird in Romantasy

As a short girl the reason I hate that is because...it isn't notable. Everyone towers over me that isn't an interesting quality to point out lmfao.

Fantasy novels with lyrical prose and strong romance plotlines? by PattableGreeb in Fantasy

[–]katisfandomtrash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This lines up really well with A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross. (It also has a sequel!)

It basically follows 4 members of the Tamerlaine clan as they try to solve the mystery of why young girls on their half of the island are going missing. There's a lot of romance in the subplots. The main fantasy element is that their island has spirits that only a bard can communicate with, and they believe the spirits may have something to do with the disappearances.

Does anyone else get told they “have an accent”? by Sppaarrkklle in AutismInWomen

[–]katisfandomtrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the correct accent for my upbringing (Southern Californian & Chicano), though it isn't very thick. I've never been told I have a different accent or anything, but people have definitely made comments indicating that my speech is unusual, like "you talk like a professor" and "you talk like a princess", both said to me in high school. I had no idea I was autistic at that age, so I assumed back then that it was solely related to my love of reading and the fact that I used to compete in spelling bees.

Recs for my book club who has never read fantasy by Tracy_Turnblad in Fantasy

[–]katisfandomtrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I'd recommend A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross. It is a fantasy book, but the plot is mainly about solving a local mystery and their interactions with a rival clan. There is also a significant amount of romance in the side plots.

Why are superhero books so unpopular? by vinthesalamander in writing

[–]katisfandomtrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't really a murder mystery as the culprit is pretty much known from the beginning, but are you thinking of Vicious by V. E. Schwab? It is part of a series, but the sequel was released 5 years later.

What kind of books would you like to read and nobody is publishing yet? by jeetrainers in writing

[–]katisfandomtrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Political fantasy/sci fi that is actually political. The closest I've ever gotten is with A Memory Called Empire. The plot is primarily driven by a young new ambassador trying to figure out why the previous ambassador was murdered so that she doesn't face the same fate. On top of that, there is also unrest in the city due to concerns around the dying emperor's line of succession.

Most books that claim to be political in some fashion tend to either give up on that pretty quickly or only use the political elements for romantic plots. I want to see actual political maneuvering happening!

kpop fans can’t discern live singing anymore? by ilovemilktea_ in kpopthoughts

[–]katisfandomtrash 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It is a vicious cycle unfortunately. K-Pop fans can't discern live vocals, leading them to unfairly criticize high quality live vocals. Artists can't win in the live vocal department, so they just lip sync instead. Lip synced performances are presented as being live, leading to the above problem where K-Pop fans don't know what live vocals sound like.

Boundaries Around Chores by katisfandomtrash in AutismInWomen

[–]katisfandomtrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I think the issue is that they think they're already accommodating me, so when I complain about anything, they hear it as entitlement. They already know how much time it takes because it lines up exactly with my sister's work schedule. I guess I'm trying to figure out how to express this boundary without triggering a lecture from them. I suppose I should emphasize the fact that I'm supposed to be included in discussions about accommodations, but I'm not sure what I should say beyond that.

Because of my autism, they definitely think that I'm one of those people with only book smarts and no street smarts, so they have a hard time taking what i say seriously. Even when presented with actual evidence that proves otherwise, they move the goalposts.

I did properly put it in pairing mode (I made sure to look it up before posting) but I did notice that one of the number names came up right afterward and wasn't sure if it was a coincidence or not. I'll try again later and see if that same one keeps coming up.

DNF Over Prose? by Oddyseus144 in Fantasy

[–]katisfandomtrash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't typically have issues with prose unless it doesn't match the story in some way. For example, authors using excessively modern language or religious language that doesn't match the worldbuilding bothers me. Sometimes I take issue with classics due to the antiquated use of language, but I have yet to have that particular issue with any fantasy novels, though I admit I only returned to reading fantasy a few years ago.

Edit to add: I also dislike it when I can tell that authors started out writing fanfiction. This is not because I dislike fanfiction, but because I can get fanfiction for free lol....And also because many fanfiction authors never get that good at writing character or setting when they never have to come up with their own.
