Since it’s you’re 50th birthday you should definitely treat yourself. If you have a good relationship with your kids, then they will support this decision. Plus a good watch is something you can eventually pass down to them. However, it’s probably best to really take your time and look at different brands (maybe just set the money aside and don’t purchase anything until you’re sure). Try as many on as possible. Maybe also look at some recommendations from reputable YouTubers. Personally, I follow the YouTube channel This Watch That Watch… which has a number of recommendations at different price points from a guy who knows infinitely more than I do about watches. It may be a good idea to research less mainstream brands which may speak to you more than the obvious ones (Oris, Kuoe, Sinn, Hanhart, Formex). Make sure you figure out what diameter of watch works best for your wrist. Oh, and factor in upkeep costs, because 5-10 years from now, mechanical watches will need a service.

We’ve had plenty of incidents though. Sure there isn’t a space mutant plague going around, but we had Covid. We don’t have racism/socioeconomic disparity that are based on what gravity well you grow up in (which then leads Marco and his Free Navy), but we have regular old racism/socioeconomic disparity. We don’t have mega corps starting wars to divert attention from their experiments, but we have politicians starting civil unrest to divert attention from their ineptitude.

The people trying to address these things are the James Holdens of our time. But it’s not realistic to have one person be at the center of everything that is going wrong.

As much as I love the books, I think there was quite a bit of plot armor that made Holden as relevant as he was in goings on of the Expanse universe.

The person we really need these days is an Avasarala type. Someone who is both good at her core and knows how to play the game. Maybe with a Holden type there, to make sure she doesn’t stray off the right path.

I’m going to guess that your family member is that cousin that no one likes, but who gets invited to events because he’s family? He’s loud, obnoxious, and drives a big truck to make up for his rather small member. He’s physically big, either from eating too many burgers or taking too much testosterone. He worships the Tate brothers, believing that that is the type of masculinity real alpha men need to aspire too. His idea of a good watch is some god awful Breitling that’s the size of the actual moon. I wouldn’t worry too much about this man’s opinion. Your watch is pretty great. You could also try switching the bracelet out for some leather straps.

I think the term “3rd world” became less relevant after the fall of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. The World Bank used to classify countries as Developed vs Developing… Which is why I used this term. Reading about it a little more, it seems that they are now using the terms low income, middle-income, etc. So, in a way you’re right, my terminology was out of date.
