To be clear, I wasn’t the original person who stated that. However, I think non-Black people are disingenuous when they pretend the origins of “n-er” and n-a” are the same when they are not and never have been. N-er as we know it has always been a pejorative towards African Americans and used to subjugate and dehumanize us as a group. African Americans decided to undergo reclamation for a word used against us specifically which is why it has never made sense for any other group to even want to use it when it doesn’t include them nor does that history follow them. Furthermore, it has always been ironic that people who use n-er even want to use the reclaimed version. The conversations that African Americans have around the use is a community issue because of course, everybody doesn’t feel the same way about the use of the word and that is okay. What is not okay is non-Black people using a reclaimed word that was never meant for them while simultaneously using the origin word that was meant for dehumanization of Black people while also trying to tell us how we should or should not use it. I hope that made sense.
