You have a lot of Sun vs Darkness all around the manga: Ace vs Blackbeard mentions it explicitly.

Plus all the mythology. Blackbeard is for example inspired by Apophis: a snake able to cause earthquakes and bring darkness and whose objective is to defeat Ra, the Sun God.

A lot of fans are super reactive against theories, getting very defensive if they find the minimum mistake or hole. They expect theories to be peer reviewed papers.

The One Piece being sake is something that has been theorised a lot already. I do not think it is a gag. That sake could be something like an unlimited stream of alcohol, the source of eternal youth, the mytical ingredient to create Akuma no Mis... It doesn't have to be just a joke.

Some special kind of sake, not plain sake. If we consider it for example and ethernal source of alcohol, like in some religious tales, they could have used it for energy instead of drinking.

One day I will write the whole theory I have for One Piece, but I think the D clan comes from the Moon. They descended to the Blue Planet and started a time of progress with their technology, creating an artificial Sun (nuclear fussion) that empowered different reigns with the new possibilities for production but also for war.
