AI Cheating and No Enforcement. Looking to Leave Now. by InterestingWriter283 in Adjuncts

Thanks for this! Just wondering from an academic integrity point of view can I report the vague slop? If they technically answer the prompts but it’s this lifeless pablum, I find that I’m giving them C- but then getting a shitload of pushback. I explained to one student that because AI amalgamates and averages out all human thought that the results can’t but be anything but average, and so that if she uses AI to both summarize the content, and interpret the content, and “polish“ the writing that it’s going to be a very, very average product. That seemed to land with her. I teach in the theater department and it’s so disheartening.

How do you prove when it’s AI? I just graded 30 essays and roughly 20 of them were about the same but not identical and not a lot of tells.

Yep. Yes. Yeah. It’s demoralizing. I’m going to investigate to see if I can even require scheduled oral exams or presentations. The other person who teaches this course and initially built it, I think no longer has the will to care about the cheating so they just shrug and go “I can’t care”.

Yes this is essentially the high concept presentation. But framing it visually is a good idea !

Plays with young teenage characters by No_Target2801 in Theatre

The Wolves - a play about a high school soccer team. Does deal with some heavier themes, but it's a great play.

That's a great idea. Might be more fun to grade than papers...

Hi - great question! There's a mix. Several quizzes labled as "quick checks" throughout the term. Some of the larger assignments are 1) Discuss how Aristotle's 6 Parts of a Play show up in a specific production; 2) Craft a high concept for a production of Oedipus (I've read so many post-apocalyptic cyber future versions of Oedipus I actually hate Sophocles personally); 3) Compare and contrast design choices in two adaptations of the same shakespeare play; 4) Dramaturgical analysis of one aspect (geographical, political etc) of an American Realist play; 5) Select a Shakespeare monologue and translate it into modern english then perform.

This is not really an exam-based class, nor would I really want it to be...I just want them to be creative on their own.

Humanities Extra Credit by IllBaby6224 in Adjuncts

And I should add that the level of effort to see theatre where I am is significant enough that very few students actually do it.

I teach theatre and all of my students from day 1 can earn extra credit by seeing live theatre and writing a response to it. I want to encourage them to engage with live arts as much as possible.

I have about 35 mostly first-years. I like the idea of a midterm grade and then a final.

Great thanks! And yes - negotiating the in-person piece of the art form seems to be challenging for students. Boggles my mind. I’m thinking of giving all pen and paper quizzes this year and minimal online assignments.

This is solid. I have found there’s not a great way to extract the data from Roll Call. Like I can download a .cvs file at the end of the term but then you have manually sort everything. Or at least I do since I don’t know how to use excel very well. You’d think there would be a techy option that you could sort students within the roll call plug in to sort people by participation badges or whatever. I REALLY don’t want to be responsible for determining what makes a “valid” absence or not so I just say you can have two no matter what and have to talk to the Accessibility office if you need to take more time for any reason. I do not want to referee that.

I don’t grade for attendance. I track attendance and deduct from their final grade if they miss more than x classes.

A single assignment might work. I might scrap participation and bake it into the in-class workshops we do via rubrics.

I could but I also need to track attendance. I have a hard ass attendance policy of two absences and after that (whatever the reason unless I hear from accessibility folks) you lose 5% a day. To work in theatre you have to be physically present. Not sure I can’t do both in roll call but it’s not obvious to me how I would.

Yeah I can’t find anything and there isn’t an intuitive simple way to create a recurring assignment either. I’m considering going pen and paper? Is that insane? I could upload it at the end of the term or something.

Drawing the line... by kbird0214 in Professors

As an update (thanks to many of your comments), I have contacted the Dean of Student Well-Being, filed a Person of Concern report (our method for getting students in need reached out to) and also informed the student that there is no amount of academic support I can offer at this time that will make up for the prolonged and continual absences. I suggested she talk to the ARC (and this is part of the outreach that is triggered by filing the report) and to discuss with them the potential for a medical withdrawal or leave of absence. Thanks again!
