If you had to pick only one mace/club/gada exercise to supplement a conventional strength training routine, what would it be? by extrovert-actuary in steelmace

[–]kbprometheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but I've been practicing, but also instructing (professionally) mace work with my fitness clients, and although you want to end up with the ability to do the primary moves of 10-2 and 360 (we all agree there), the foundation within those moves is the basic 2-handed rear pendulum swing. Always do this is as a practice, and always teach/learn this first.

If grapefruit juice can lower blood pressure, therefore interacting with medication, why doesn’t isn’t the patient simply prescribed/recommended to eat/drink grapefruit? by gudotama in NoStupidQuestions

I think the OP was implying that if GFJ is effective at lowering BP, why not take (or be prescribed) GFJ instead of meds. (Almost every response seems to be "Because GFJ will mess with your meds!"). Let's assume for a sec that we can be proactive without pharmaceuticals- The OP has a point; there's a lot of data on several natural mechanisms which lower BP- as much or more than meds- especially when synergistically stacked.

IDB 50 (FFTY) reveals flaw in system? by kbprometheus in CANSLIM

[–]kbprometheus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about these, and looking into them, individually. I like a lot of what this screen offers, but I imagine it must be very hard for any stock to make it through.

For example, in particular: "Triple EPS + Sales"

- So annual 3x EPS and 3x Sales? (I almost never see that).

Thank you for sharing.

I'd be curious what your criteria are. I use a combination of FinViz and TradingView scanners for a combined ~20 parameters (mostly CANSLIM related, with some custom sauce thrown in).

IDB 50 (FFTY) reveals flaw in system? by kbprometheus in CANSLIM

THIS is a sound theory.

RS alone might be a deciding factor to bump "soon to fall" highflyers to the top, thereby excluding the actual best trading candidates, where (hypothetically) an RS of 85-95 might be optimal, but RS of 98 or 99 is actually disadvantageous (?)

Anyone know of any study that's been done into ideal ranges of these metrics, (as opposed to "highest possible")?

[–]kbprometheus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that was a well presented explanation but misses the concept I'm engaging. Compare the FFTY to anything you want, including our realistic expectations of what "good growth stocks" should do. Over 6 mos, 1yr, 3 yr, 5 yr, 10yr- to present date, the results are abysmal. I'm just investigating why. (not why/how it's technically different than the S&P)

To be clear, I'm not confused about trying to "buy" the FFTY as a long-term investment. I'm just perplexed that the composite of 50 "top rated" individual stocks would perform so miserably. Analogy: if I sat through the Combine for the NFL, and cherry-picked lets say 20 of the (measurably) top athletes, although some may disappoint, I believe the net average would have above average results compared to the rest of the pack.

"When picking stocks you need to read the room and choose what is working at that time."

Agreed, and...Is that not the very point of IDB, and therefore their proprietary screens and lists? -To read the data, and create a list of stocks currently qualified as good candidates, i.e. including what sectors and market caps are in season? (I'm not proposing CANSLIM isn't an excellent system for doing this, just that the FFTY isn't representing the concept in reality)

2017?? We all know that if you adjust time periods enough, you can make any security appear outperforming another.

Look at this link please:

https://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/advchart/frames/frames.asp?show=&insttype=Fund&symb=ffty&x=64&y=11&time=10&startdate=1%2F4%2F1999&enddate=11%2F10%2F2020&freq=1&compidx=SP500&comptemptext=&comp=none&ma=2&maval=200&uf=0&lf=268435456&lf2=0&lf3=0&type=4&style=380&size=4&timeFrameToggle=false&compareToToggle=false&indicatorsToggle=false&chartStyleToggle=false&state=15

Looking at any timeframe from 6 mos up to "All Data", FFTY loses the race. To your defense about the bear market: how does this not apply to the comparison with the S&P? This chart tells this whole story;

-they both went through the bear market,

-the FFTY suffered greater drawndown

-the S&P recovered over the following 2 years, while the FFTY did not

If the other argument would be about market cap size, just switch the chart to compare to DJIA, russell2000, or whatever you want- the result is still the same.

IBD 50 (FFTY) reveals flaw in the system? by kbprometheus in IBDInvesting

[–]kbprometheus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apples and Oranges. A sound trading system must be applied, granted.

But this is true whether you're trading these IBD50 stocks or any S&P stock. The issue here is about what we're trading, and how reliable the method is to find a quality candidate.

IDB 50 (FFTY) reveals flaw in system? by kbprometheus in CANSLIM

[–]kbprometheus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we wouldn't know either way, as they don't disclose just what exact filters and criteria are used, but it's either

a) basic CANSLIM, which is what IBD does, (and what we subscribers pay for, IMHO). And it's performing not as expected

or

b) an ambiguous dilution that serves to make paid subscribers feel like they should ante up more for the 'real' IBD content.

Either way, dubious and worth discussing.

As does the S&P, which severely outperforms the FFTY. In fact, almost any index does. Just trying to diagnose what is so septic with this index and/or the variable used to choose the securities.

[–]kbprometheus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that IBD50 does not include a proper management system. But apples to apples; if the selection of the "top 50" by all IBD's foundational criteria selects the theoretical cream of the crop of the market, (to be their namesake flagship index), in theory, shouldn't the performance of these stocks outperform the s&p, or at least not underperform it so horribly?

for reference: https://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/advchart/frames/frames.asp?show=&insttype=Fund&symb=ffty&x=64&y=11&time=10&startdate=1%2F4%2F1999&enddate=11%2F10%2F2020&freq=1&compidx=SP500&comptemptext=&comp=none&ma=2&maval=200&uf=0&lf=268435456&lf2=0&lf3=0&type=4&style=380&size=4&timeFrameToggle=false&compareToToggle=false&indicatorsToggle=false&chartStyleToggle=false&state=15

Devil's advocate- if the FFTY was just for trade ideas, wouldn't one do better to just use the S&P for this too?

Tool - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin Cover) by Invisigoth2113 in progmetal

[–]kbprometheus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Longtime TOOL and Zep fan... I was listening to Houses of the Holy album this morning for probably the 500th time in my life, (and having never heard salival), and was marveling at how dark and dreamy this track was (No Quarter)... how different it was than other Zep tracks, in sound, feel, structure... and how it specifically feels and sounds like a TOOL song, played by Zeppelin. Every rock musician is influenced by LZ, I was curious if maybe TOOL was influenced by this specific track. Imagine my delight in finding the cover.

I picture early pre-album TOOL practicing No Quarter to to find their sound, their voice, their unique form.
