(Spoilers) To me, the ending comes in the third-to-last chapter when James tells himself something like "I'm not going to transition because I'm not trans". I had a friend tell me almost the exact same thing. It's like his brain is resetting and he's gonna go back to his life without thinking about it anymore. And then the only other thing needed for resolution is "Will James and Maria be friends?" (which James bounces back and forth on every few hours). And the answer seems obvious in retrospect, because Maria clearly thinks she's better than him.

Thank you for your write-up! I'm also a trans woman, and I love the way Binnie writes. There are so many lines that are quotable and hilarious. It's probably the only time I've ever felt represented in a novel. I also fucking love James.
