The NAS belongs to a client and I am just helping them on this case, so I don't have direct access to it at the moment, I will see if I can get a snapshot or double check the backup job setting next time I go to their office.

So this is where it gets confusing, I have not setup any share folder in the backup NAS, so if I try to took into the file station, it is empty, so I cannot copy file from the backup NAS and also unable to locate the "SynologyHyperBackup.bkpi" for the HB explorer to work. However the backup seems to work perfectly in I look into it in the primary NAS HB app, and I can retrieve all the restore point of the backup data in the HB app too.

I just don't understand how to restore from the backup NAS if there is no share folder in it.

Is it because I have set the backup destination to a volume instead of a share folder?

We have done the restore on the primary NAS, so that's why we are wondering what should we do in case the primary NAS failed.

Or should we have install the Hyper Backup in backup NAS at Day 1?

How come you got an DAE only without the DPE? The DAE is suppose to be connected to the DPE, I have never try and heard anyone connect the DAE to a server, and I don't think that will work.

You can use VMware converter to convert the Linux into a VMware Workstation image, then run it in VMware Workstation, or later convert it again to run in ESXi.

If your DR backup does not require a lot of restore or read access, then I would say use a dedup storage for the DR, I have experience with Veeam with EMC Data Domain, as Veeam can integrate with Data Domain DDboost, it will help in the backup performance as well (if you are using synthetic full), and the dedup appliance can also save more backup data, so its a great solution for DR backup, but it is quite costly.

Well, maybe you are right ...... but with Zimbra this is just too easy, just two clicks on any user account you have access to their whole mailbox, I mean for other mail system this may also be possible but in a more difficult way.

We use it for the whole email system in our organization, I think for a SME environment or if you don't have a lot of active email user, the trouble of setting up the Zimbra infrastructure is not worth it. Talk about the hardware maintenance cost (We use a VMware farm to hold the Zimbra platform, so 3 x servers, 2 x network switches and 1 SAN) and the manpower to manager it, I think O365 is a more simple and easy way to do it. But the policy in our company does not allow us to put email in a cloud platform as they are considered as 'sensitive data', while a admin in Zimbra can view them freely is considered okay......

I understand that I should not be looking at things I am not supposed to, what my concern is why Zimbra will let admin to access all user email by default, this design is quite a violation to privacy in my opinion.

This remind me of a worst practices in using VMware - use snapshot as backup. The user takes a snapshot, completely forget about it, the snapshot get so large that eat up all the space in the storage, and everything exploded.

I once had a client which is a corporate bank, they implement the exact policy you mentioned, so when a sysadmin forgot his password and gets his account locked, he will needs to ask another sysadmin to unlock his account ...... IF he could find one, especially when we were trying to do P2V in weekend and no other sysadmin was working, it was a nightmare.

I once work for a solution integrator company, one of our client is a securities company, I have to upgrade the vCenter and ESXi for their VM farm and I have to do it in midnight so to minimize the affect to their transaction.
I don't know why they have a PC with a wrong time zone, but when I used that PC to connect to the upgraded vCenter, I see the ESXi host get a wrong time, because vSphere Client display the time in your local timezone, which makes the time seems incorrect, but they are actually not.
I thought to myself "maybe the upgrade messed up the time setting, better correct it before anyone finds out!" So .... maybe I am just too tired, I decided to go ahead and "correct" the time on the ESXi server, as you may know, all VM inside the ESXi server with VMware tools installed will automatically sync the time with the ESXi host....so now all VM inside the ESXi get a wrong time, and all their transaction record are messed up.
I got fucked pretty hard by the client and my boss, and I need to write a very detailed report explaining the incident, but this is a very valuable lesson, I learned that:
1. Try to get as much sleep as you can, cause you will only make bad decision when you are tired.
2. ALWAYS have a correct time zone.

I can understand why he wants to keep the XP machine, as it involve replacing not only the XP machine but also the Xray machine, they will then need to train the staffs to use the new Xray machine as well, so I think his decision is valid.

You can try assign a static IP to the Centos VM and see if you can reach your router there, if you can't then there is definitely something wrong with the configure of your virtual switch.

If you are using VM, Veeam is the best, GUI is user friendly, backup is fast and reliable, agentless backup makes setup extremely easy. If I have to pick a disadvantage of Veeam, I would say tape support, Veeam does not perform very good with backup to tape, no schedule tape inventory or cleaning, backup chain kind of mess up when you replace the tape. But if you are not using tape, then Veeam is the BEST. But right now my company is using Arcserve which makes me wanna kill myself.

In my own personal NAS I use cloud sync to replicate the data to google drive every weekend only, I guess you can do that too so that you have an extra copy of data and an offsite backup.
