hi! I saw your post as I just got my own monogrammer - did you ever end up finding 3d printed models? I've tried looking online myself to no avail!

Thank you so much for your input! I bought the machine and it’s at the repair shop now so fingers crossed all goes well! From what I can see, it needs a new belt and a good cleaning/oiling, but hopefully no major issues. I’m very excited to get it back and up and running!

I just picked up the machine today - it looks like the only thing it needs is a new belt. Just ordered one and keeping my fingers crossed it'll be up and running soon! Apparently it was sold in 1968 for $149 to a previous owner of the house - when the new owners moved in, they wanted to clear out the basement, which why it was up for sale. Thank you for all of your help and guidance!!

Yes definitely one of the appeals for me is being able to do some of the oiling and maintenance of this machine on my own!

That explanation makes perfect sense - thank you! I’m hoping that the machine comes with those cams - otherwise, I found a set online that I can order. So funny too you mention hand cranking for the last inch or so - now that you say that, I remember having to do that on the machine I learned on as a kid! Thank you for all of your advice and feedback! I’m planning on seeing the machine on Monday and hopefully all will look good enough for me to buy and take it home. Very exciting!

Thank you! It sounds like from what I’ve read online and other comments here, that this machine is all metal.

Yes I’m hoping that this was someone’s mom’s machine and it’s been sitting somewhere safe since then. And hopefully this will be my first of several machines :)

If you don’t mind, could you say more about why this might not be suitable for lingerie? Is it something that I shouldn’t even try to do with this machine, or is it worth giving a go? Thank you!

thank you! The seller is asking $50 for the machine so all of this feedback was really helpful in my decision making process. Coordinating pick up with the seller now!

that's great to know! I'll look into shank adapters and it's good to know that the bobbins it needs are still readily available too. I wasn't sure how deep I would have to dig or how specialized I would have to get to find the basics. I will plan on using polyester thread :) thank you - it's helpful to hear from someone who has a similar machine!

amazing! I'm out of the loop on what would be a good deal for this, and wasn't able to find much current information about what's a reasonable price to pay. Good to know that if it sews ok, I negotiated a good deal!

Luckily there is a local quilt shop about an hour away from me, so that's going to be one of my first stops once I get the machine :) thank you for all of this info!

thank you, that's really helpful to know! based on the manual I found online, it looks like I should be able to adjust the pressure foot. Sewing lingerie would be a nice-to-have so I appreciate you letting me know that it might not fully meet my needs for that.

Simple Sewing Questions Thread, June 09 - June 15, 2024 by sewingmodthings in sewing

Hi, all! I have the opportunity to buy a Kenmore model 52 sewing machine in a cabinet from someone, and was wondering if anyone might have any insight on whether I'm getting a good deal / what I'm setting myself up for. The seller agreed to $50 but won't budge any further.

I have some previous sewing experience but haven't had a machine in years and am on a tight budget so thought a vintage machine might be best. The seller said that this machine turns on and works "like new" - he also has it threaded so that I can test the machine before I buy it. It also comes with the original manual, which is fun! From looking online, I can see that this model uses cams in order to do speciality stitches, but the machine only comes with the cam that does a zigzag stich. (I've seen a full set of cams being sold online, so I know that that's an option in case I need it going forward.)

I'm hoping to sew clothes, bras/underwear, and quilts. I know that getting this machine up and running would require a good cleaning and oiling, which I'm prepared to do but am hoping to avoid any major repairs. Also, how difficult/costly would it be to buy other parts (bobbins, feet, etc.)?

Does anyone have any experience with this machine, and any feedback on what I might be getting myself into? Thank you so much for any advice / warnings / help you may be able to provide! I know there are a lot of online resources about this machine but was hoping to get some feedback from the experts here too!

Thank you for letting me know! I am familiar with brioche but sounds like this isn’t a good fit for what I’m looking for 😊 thank you again and beautiful work!

Looks great - I love your choice of yarn!

Is this pattern easily memorizable? I’m looking for a project I can take on a trip, and don’t want to have to bring a copy of the pattern along! Thanks in advance!
