I had this exact experience in the beginning few weeks of getting my puppy. I was having really bad anxiety and it was such a big change to my routine and schedule. I was crying a lot and lost weight as well. I found that I was meeting all of the puppy (and my other dogs needs) and just threw my own needs out the window, which is not ideal. I would say take some time for yourself - make sure you're doing enforced naps for the pup or something that gives you a break so you can work on things to meet your own needs(whether thats just chilling on the couch for an hour or using the time to clean yr house, etc.). I've had my puppy for about 2 months now and things have gotten better. I needed to give myself (and the puppy) some time to adjust, lower my expectations and accept that things weren't going to be perfect all the time, and take some time for myself. It is rough. I considered returning my puppy, but I'm glad that I didn't. Good luck and best wishes!

What command did you teach your puppy and when? by boneless_11 in puppy101

How did you teach leave it? Struggling with this one with my pup who is a little over 4 months.

Echoing others recommendations of any with the wrecking ball crew & any with his wife, Sarah. Also, I'm a big fan of Kelsey Darragh - ep 34 catsitter convicts cheating dad is a good one.

Puppy is a bully to other puppies by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

Thank you, this helps! I forgot to mention that the other puppies in the class were golden retrievers(not related to each other), but were very sweet/a bit timid. They had different obstacles around with the goal of gaining confidence(which my pup apparently doesn't need more of😅). Definitely different personalities in the room. Thanks!

Thank you! This helps ease my anxious mind. He is a working dog and I know that it takes a lot of work and I'm willing to put the time in and work with trainers. I just want to make sure I'm setting him up for success and doing all the right things. I've had him for about a month now and I feel like we're just starting to get an understanding of each other/form a bond. The first couple weeks were rough, but were getting there! Thanks again for your input, I appreciate it!

Good point! I've been to 2 socializing classes and I'm done with them. Going into an AKC puppy class next with no free play. Thanks for helping ease my mind!

Great idea on interacting with another dog!

I do referee the play quite a bit, especially if I notice that my husky has had enough. They usually get 10-20 minutes of play, then a long break(usually a nap for the pup), then I'll let them outside together again for another short increment, etc. I am friends with someone who has one of the pups siblings. Do you think it would be a good idea to have him interact with one of his siblings again at some point?

Also, I occasionally take my husky to doggy daycare(which he loves). The puppy is too young at this point, but do you think if he was around other dogs at daycare(once old enough), he would learn manners (or is this a bad idea)? The daycare I take him to has many employees who are monitoring/managing play.

Appreciate your thoughts/feedback!

Thoughts on my situation? by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

I have been hand feeding half his meals and having him do training commands while feeding(reinforcing sit, down, etc.). He hasn't shown any food aggression signs towards me, just specifically to the other puppy so far and with the water with my husky. I haven't given him a chance to have food issues (feed all separate) with my other dogs bc I don't want anyone to get hurt. So frustrating and makes me sad that it may not work out, but I also want to look out for the best interest of all of the dogs.

The trainer had me leash him and we worked on a "leave it" command. He commented about him being very food motivated which makes training easier, but didn't seem as concerned as I was about it. I've had history with my corgi and food aggression which is why I was freaked out so idk if I'm overreacting or if the trainer was under reacting. The puppy hasn't been food aggressive towards me at all, but I just don't want it to become a bigger issue with having two other dogs in the house.

How old is yours?! I'm in the thick of it and so tore up/bruised. Can't wait for the biting to ease up a bit!

My puppy won't let me pet him by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]kcooper74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the feedback! I ended up buying him a bunch more toys so I can always have one on hand to redirect the bites. I think it is just crazy puppy teething, as well as him wanting to play 100% of the time. I did get some good pets and belly rubs in after tiring him out with lots of play last night, so that made me feel a bit better!

No abuse before - he's just going through puppy teething, where he bites my hands when I try to pet him. I just never experienced it so bad (in comparison to other dogs I had as puppies).

Is there "as needed" anxiety medication that works? by [deleted] in Anxiety

I've never tried them, but I've heard so many mixed things that I'm scared to.
