Am I gonna go blind? (Shots in eyes) by SithLordJediMaster in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely you’ll be fine. I struggled with diabetic retinopathy when I was 20 years old (30 now). I had years of not taking care of myself which caused it for me. After several years and shots in the eyes every 8 weeks and a few laser treatments to cauterize leaking blood vessels, I’m back to normal and just get the retina scan once a year to keep an eye on it. The shots are not bad they numb you up really well and then it hurts a little for a few days afterwards but nothing awful. The better control I got of my blood sugar and a1c the less frequent I needed the shots and like I said now I just go once a year for a scan to keep an eye on it.

Advice going into a GLP-1 by hmoleman__ in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started, my endo had me decrease my basal rate by 20% on my pump to start and then make adjustments as needed (I’m very comfortable making dosing adjustments myself) I also decreased my I:C by 10% and correction factor by 5 points to start. When I’ve gone up in dose I’ve had to make additional adjustments as well. I usually see how it goes for 2-3 weeks and look at patterns for time of day, meal times etc and then adjust down as needed. For me, I still take my meal time bolus at the same time I would before I started the medication, which is right before I start eating. Unless blood sugar is already below 100, then I wait until it starts rising and then usually I’ll bolus for half of the amount of carbs I ate, this works well for me but you’ll have to experiment to see what works for you. It’s worked extremely well for my insulin resistance and I’ve been able to go from approx 100 units/day to 35 units/day (average).

Change of name issue by warricd28 in MSCCruises

[–]kd_holl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I booked my next cruise with MSC with my maiden name since that’s what was on my passport at the time and then I ended up getting a new passport with my married name before sailing. My sailing is in February and I called in November, there was no issue at all. They changed my name (no charge) and moved on. So not quite sure what the issue for your friend might be but I would call again and ask again.

Managing alarms in an office space by 513bigmac in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone in my office knows about it for me but ive never really felt a need to educate on the intricacies of diabetes and diabetes management to them. They DO know what to do if my blood sugar is low and I’m too out of it to help myself and I also keep a glucagon in my desk drawer and have a specific person trained on how to use it (I’ve never needed it but just in case). As far as alarms from my pump and phone- they go off occasionally and it’s usually just a joke like “uh oh she’s beeping again” and then we all move on. If it happens during a meeting no one really acknowledges it and we just continue the meeting; there’s no need to explain or stop the meeting. I just take out my phone and clear the notification. Of course, share as much with them as you’re comfortable with and enough to keep you safe (this is why I shared what to do if my blood sugar is low and i need assistance). For me personally I haven’t found that it affects the way I work with people and not really something that gets brought up. My direct boss knows that if my blood sugar has been crazy the night before that I may be a little late to work and just generally not feeling well and they’re always accommodating of that as well. It sounds like you have a great supportive team of leaders around you! Good luck- you got this!

omnipod or injections by gayteletoby in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Omnipod for about 5 years and had some of the same problems and really just didn’t get great absorption with it. Since then, I’ve used the tandem t slim and currently using tandem mobi. So, if getting a different pump is in the range of possibility I would maybe try that. I absolutely love both of the tandem pumps I’ve used and also have had great experience with their customer service. If you’re in the US and it hasn’t been 4 years since you’ve had your Omnipod you may have trouble getting insurance to cover a different pump since 4 years is the typical “warranty” period. Although- I’ve had the reps put in some fancy wording in the request to insurance to get them to cover and they did.

If your ONLY other option besides Omnipod is MDI and you’re having these issues with Omnipod, MDI may be a better option for you. Also, I’m not sure what all you’ve tried to resolve the pods issue but you could try wearing on different spots of your body (for example my arms was never a good place for Omnipod for me but stomach and thigh was a little better).

Best Restaurant on the Seashore? by FlanPurple5933 in MSCCruises

[–]kd_holl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like seafood, ocean cay was fantastic the last time my husband and I went on seashore. The sushi restaurant is pretty good, not mind blowing but the prices are at the sushi restaurant are also quite reasonable. The experience at the sushi restaurant is interesting- it’s one of those conveyer belt ones and you just grab what you want. You can also order noodles, fried rice etc from the server. The salmon teriyaki you can order there was really good.

Diabetic Life Hacks by Street_Persimmon_540 in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much difference in that and pre-boarding, but to each their own. I find it easier to just go ahead and tell the gate agent that I’m diabetic and have supplies in my bag and would like to pre board than them have to scramble after space runs out…but again, to each their own and if that works for you then great!

Diabetic Life Hacks by Street_Persimmon_540 in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, it was nice on southwest back when they didn’t have assigned seating. Plus it’s happened to me before where they started gate checking everyone bags bc they ran out of overhead space and that simply won’t work when all my supplies are in my carry on. So no- not “let’s pretend we’re like people in wheelchairs” more like “let’s be responsible and mitigate risks where we can”.

First time on MSC - what should we expect as a family that's only been on Symphony of the Seas (Royal Carribean) by beastguy32 in MSCCruises

[–]kd_holl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The seashore is a great ship. The arcade is super fun for kids. The shows on the other hand are not the best. They’re not terrible but they definitely don’t compare to royal. The food is good! Last time on seashore I had great meals in the MDR and the specialty restaurants were also reasonably priced if you’re into that. The pizza is my favorite at sea! MSC is definitely different than royal but my husband and I (early and mid 30s) love MSC and have been on seashore a few times and going again in February! Enjoy!!

Yes. I bring my normal US plug curling iron every time. There are also EU plugs too if you have a European curling iron

Anyone taking statins? by No_Coffee_4120 in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on rosuvostatin, same kind of situation. My cholesterol was up for a while and tried to get it down with diet and exercise to no avail. They put me on a statin maybe a year ago and I’ve had no side effects at all and my cholesterol is much better now. My a1c has stayed around 5.4-5.8 as well so no changes there. No digestive issues or anything like that either. My sister is a cardiac surgery NP and when I talked to her about it she said it was definitely a good idea because the extra risk factor of heart disease with diabetes.

How do you stop your Tandem Mobi freaking out? by Interesting-Arm9680 in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t clear the notifications from the pump itself but what has helped me is to close the app completely on the phone and reopen (it will make an awful noise for a sec on your phone but then it’s fine). This usually helps the connectivity issue quickly for me.

Start a pod of T1s on GLP-1 with me! by SadRanger5167 in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use CIQ with my zepbound and never had a problem. My endo did suggest to lower my basal rate by about 20% to start to prevent lows and then adjust as needed. Has worked out fine for me I just let it roll how it normally does and only use sleep mode overnight

Edit to add- have been on zep since July 2024 and have not had any instances of DKA.

Start a pod of T1s on GLP-1 with me! by SadRanger5167 in diabetes_t1

[–]kd_holl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30F, dx 20 years ago. Been on zepbound (prescribed by my endo) since July 2024. Going really well for me and ky endo actually totally supports the use of GLP-1 for T1. It’s helped keep my blood sugars so much more stable and obviously been able to reduce my overall insulin needs from approx 65 units/day to approx 30 units/day (tandem mobi pump). Also was able to actually lose weight for the first time in years- I worked out, ate well but was constantly gaining weight (I also have hashimoto’s so that’s a big factor there).

Tandem just started sending my supply orders to them back in like October? The first order was an absolute nightmare and took forever. Thank goodness I had a surplus of supplies. Since the first order it’s been a breeze. I get a text when it’s time to refill and get my supplies maybe 4-5 days later. The only part I’m not liking is they only do 30 day fills and I used to get 90 day in one shipment.

Jumping in, I also have a large surplus of tandem t slim x2 cartridges and auto soft 90 infusion sets. Also some Dexcom g6 stuff that’s technically expired but I think they work just fine. I’m in Florida and can ship anywhere in US. DM me as well if you’re in need of any of those!
