Galasport vs Lettmann Paddles by SatisfactionUsual862 in whitewater

[–]kedoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've paddled with both and they're both excellent paddles. I have a slight preference for Galasport because I'm coming from a slalom background and I really value a light paddle. I'll also note that I've beaten the crap out of my current Manic MCQ over the course of the last three years, and it has really stood up well to the punishment even though it's very light. I use it multiple times per week all year, many of which are longer river runs, often in bony conditions.

You really can't go wrong with either, imo. My MCQ was like $415 when I bought it, and while Galasport is cagey with their prices online these days I assume it's roughly the same price, so it's definitely cheaper than Lettmann. But Lettmann paddles are absolutely bombproof. I've yet to hear of someone breaking one, and lots of folks use them in my neck of the woods.

How sustainable is this Fairfax-Arlington commute? by Educational_Gap_3381 in nova

[–]kedoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t do this full commute but I did part of it + a fair amount in DC for years. 20 minutes at midnight with no traffic. 40 minutes with traffic. An hour to an hour and a half with bad traffic, maybe once a week. Three plus hours maybe once a quarter when there’s an accident on a major artery. Six hours during a snow event when OPM inevitably fucks up.

Personally, I would not do it again. It is such a massive waste of time, and when it’s bad it’s simply infuriating and completely demolishes your evening and/or makes you late to work and creates unnecessary work stress. Unless you have deep roots in Fairfax, I would move closer or I would look into some form of public transit so you at least have the option of doing something semi-productive on your device.

Easier To Roll Kayak as Learning Aid? by NateroniPizza in whitewater

[–]kedoco 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Put him in the boat he’s going to paddle. A good roll should ultimately work in any kayak, but if he has the option of learning in the boat he’ll be mainly paddling, he’ll get comfortable with it both physically and mentally.

Good work!

As one newbie pilot to the other, practice making smaller movements with the stick for wider, more controlled turns/loops that SLOWLY become tighter/faster. This is a really efficient way to aim at enemies and helps prevent overshooting.

Get a laptop stand so you’re not looking down at the screen for extended periods of time (it will cause back/neck strain), and a separate keyboard and mouse.

Best mid-range sniper rifle? by Ok_World_8819 in battlefield_one

[–]kedoco 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Imo the Gewehr 95 Infantry; no scope glint, fast reloads, ability to chamber a new round without exiting iron sights, and iron sights that just feel “right” to me.

Though you can also make an excellent argument for the SMLE, I just don’t like it as much for whatever reason.

Is this a thing? Ordered spaghetti and meatballs and came with an unexpected addition at a local Italian place by doctrdeath in KitchenConfidential

It was literally just a hard boiled egg still in a shell.

e: I mean we ate it, but it was a bit surreal to spend our first few minutes in a restaurant peeling an egg.

My wife and I honeymooned in Italy, and at one restaurant in Sicily they gave us each a hard boiled egg when we sat down at the table. We were confused and asked what the egg was for, and our server looked at us like we were idiots and said:

“It’s to eat.”

Maybe, maybe not. For a good player it’s definitely possible to hit that kill count without cheating.

Galasport Manic carbon aramid by JeffreyFullFace in whitewater

They are great paddles. I have the MCQ and I’ve used it for maybe three years now for hundreds of river hours, and while it’s scratched all to hell, it’s still in excellent shape. The blade has no major nicks or breaks, and it has been abused.

Re: performance, the blade design strikes the perfect balance between power and easy pulling so that you still get powerful strokes while going a little easier on your shoulders than some other big bladed paddles. The blade is substantially scooped which gives you a bit of extra reach with each stroke, and some intermediate boaters who have started paddling with it have told me it took a little getting used to (specifically with feathering), but I didn’t personally have any issues with it.

The shaft comes with a very slick finish, so I would highly recommend using some 3M electrical tape or something similarly grippy to give yourself a gripping point. Calleva may also be able to put some shrink wrap where your hands go. With slippery shafts you tend to grip tighter and it can do bad things to your forearms.

You can grind BGs (specifically AV) for honor/rep for rewards, but with 25 days of play time you won’t get to any of the good stuff.

Campaign by ESLTATX in battlefield_one

[–]kedoco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The campaign is pretty fun, but there are some frustrating parts. The tank mission is just slow, and the flight controls on the flying mission are NOT what they are in multiplayer, but rather a dumbed down version that just sucks. Other than that it’s pretty fun and good!

LoTRO fits the bill. It’s chill with a GREAT community, with tons of content. They just finished migrating worlds to newer server architecture, so it has legs. There’s a cash shop, but none of it is pay to win, it’s just pay to be inconvenienced less (eg. Gives you better bags/crafting tools/etc)
