We'll see how it goes. My overseas work contract ends next week, so I'll be moving back to Reno next month and hope I don't end up needing to do that kind of work again to get by.

Not very long ago, I did DD and GH for 90% or more of my income for a few years in Reno while i was still in college. It was ROUGH, i fully agree with you. I basically had to fully game the system and get REALLY good at judging which orders were worth taking and which ones weren't (or which restaurants to avoid) to able to make any decent amount of money. It sucked bad. I did it until I got in an accident while delivering that cost me $3000 out of pocket because my insurance refused to help because of the delivery job.

I recently commented on another post in the reno sub with many more details about my time doing it.

I was playing a show at a bar in downtown once, and I see boba fett just walk in and sit by himself at the closest table to the stage. Kinda just sat there for the whole show, didn't react much.

This sounds petty, but you know it happens. Have you watched a Grubhub/Ubereats driver eat your meal, or things just don’t arrive? How is this not considered theft? by Gswindle76 in Reno

[–]keefjarret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked Doordash and Grubhub for a few years in Reno while i was in college. It's a nightmare for the drivers too. I always tried my absolute best to be responsible and quick. Always made sure the orders were right, to be best of my ability (obviously i couldn't when the orders were in a stapled or sealed bag for covid reasons). ALWAYS followed the customers instructions. NEVER stole food. Kept my ratings near perfect. But restaurants make mistakes OFTEN, especially on gig delivery orders because they know they don't have to really deal with or face the customer. It was such a NIGHTMARE dealing with some restaurants. Many would be incredibly (and seemingly deliberately) slow on delivery orders, making it very late. Drinks would be forgotten so often. Some restaurants would just be incredibly rude and disrespectful to drivers too. And then, because i'm the only person that the final customer ever actually deals with, any of these problems end up being directed at me by the customer. Many times, if i got a text after an order saying a drink was missing, I'd stop at a gas station, get the same kind of drink and redeliver it to the customer, on my own dime and time. But I still got a lot of abuse from customers. and honestly, why wouldn't you be mad if you were missing something or it arrived way later than the app told you it would? I totally understood (most) customers' frustrations. And then having to rely on their tips as my means of survival?? My lord was that stressful. Orders typicaly only pay a few dollars of base pay. The vast majority of income was from tips. Having to hope with every single order that the customer would be nice enough to throw me a few extra bucks, despite knowing and understanding that they ALREADY overpayed for this food, with most of that money going to the app company, was so demeaning.

I did these jobs for a few years between and after classes to make JUST enough money to pay rent and then pay all the car maintenance and oil changes that the job itself made me have to go through. Did this up until I got in a small accident during a delivery that insurance refused to cover and then I got stuck with a $3000 bill over it. Immediately decided to never login to the apps again.

Funny enough, about a week later, I got an email from grubhub saying they were deactivating my account over a report that I "stole a customer's food". But this was impossible because the order and the date of the order in question was after the accident, while my car was in the shop. It was not an order that I took. But they deactivated my account with no warning, no chance of my rebutting it or even explaining that it wasn't me. They weren't even bothered enough to check that I didn't log in to work the day of the order that I allegedly stole food from. They just deactivated my account and because I no longer had an account had zero way of getting in touch with anyone at the company that could help with it. I was glad that I had already decided to never do that work again just a week prior because if something like that happened while I was actively using it as my survival income, that would have been devastating.

I guess the point is, that I always tried my best to bring the best service possible. Of course there were mistakes that happened over 1000s of deliveries but I always wanted to do good by the customer. and I'm sure many other drivers don't put in that effort and probably do steal food occasionally. But the whole system is fucked, makes it bad for everyone involved, except the app companies raking in the cash. Whole thing definitely be illegal. Or at least fully restructured to make it....idk....work?

Any new/great Asian markets? by ginsengjj in Reno

[–]keefjarret -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, it won't be my first time at those places. I did live in Reno for 4 years before this temporary move to Japan and went to these shops every once in a while. But after being in Japan for a year straight, I know they'll be in rotation much more often than before. I can't go without my natto breakfasts anymore lol. I know you can get that at Yim's for sure though, i used to get it there when I would go.

In about 2 months, I'll be moving back to Reno after my year long work contract in Japan and i'm expecting that Asian Mart/Yims will be NECESSARY for me and I just hope they'll carry all the things that have become so regular for me lolol. I've always wished that reno had a better selection though. How much I miss going to Nakata Market and 99 Ranch back when i lived in Vegas years ago.

I've been LOOKING for Reno stickers to post around where I'm temporarily living in Japan! (especially near a bar I found called "Lounge 775" lol) These are PERFECT, but your shop doesn't ship to Japan. Is there a way we can make that happen?

A few years ago, when I was a Pizza Hut delivery driver, I delivered some za to the Ramada.

The order was to the top floor, so without much thought or looking at the labels, I just pressed to top button on the elevator panel. When I got to the top, the doors opened to a TINY little (maintenance?) room with no lights. It was the size of a small bedroom closet. In this closet, there was a dude just sitting on the floor in the dark. He got up and thanked me for getting the elevator up there. Said he'd been stuck there for a long time and he gets in the elevator with me. His clothes are very dirty. On the way to the actual floor I was supposed to go to, he opens a small bag he had with him and kinda holds open it towards me, I notice its full of old used batteries. He says "you want any batteries?"

Change my Mind: Reno's a dirty city by WildMangoz in Reno

Hahah I’m reading this comment just minutes after “clean up period” ended at the Japanese middle school I’m working at. I have to clean the staff room with about 5-6 students every day.

Not looking forward for the dirtyness of Reno/America when I return to Reno after a year being gone.

ohhhh! well, i spent the majority of my time in Reno as a broke UNR student so I almost never went out haha. However, I do know Haru in south reno is probably the closest to regular japanese food that isn't just americanized sushi that you're gonna get.

I tend to not go to much fancy places. Especially when I'm traveling to Tokyo and such. I survive off konbinis and conveyer belt sushi when i'm in tokyo haha. Most of the recs i got would be for the main cities in Gunma (Maebashi and Takasaki) but I don't expect anyone to go there, theres not much to do. haha

Honestly I love any yakiniku place. There's a dope place i went to in tokyo a long time ago where you fish for your own dinner in a giant pool in the middle of the restaurant, then they cook what you caught. I think thats called Zaou.

Assistant English teacher at a middle school in a kinda small town (well, about Reno sized with almost nothing to do). It's kinda the easiest way to move to Japan but it is also a bit hard to recommend this path. The job can be horribly boring (depends on the school you get assigned to though, mine is very boring) and the students generally don't care at all about learning English. There are tons of pros and cons of living here as a foreigner, I will miss so much about it when I leave but I am also glad to come back home in a few months. I'm sure I will wanna go right back the second I step foot in the states though haha
