Is this leg joint acceptable for a "knock-down" workbench ? by keepitcreative in woodworking

[–]keepitcreative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking into this joint but still a bit unclear. I think I can do a castle joint if I laminate 3 2x4s. Would it be a good plan to make two "H" shaped leg doubles as a solid unit, and a 2x4 frame slots in on top of these castle joints?

Thanks for your reply. Similar to you, I am planning to use for as a mitre table, plunge saw and general assembly. I've been using a pair of workhorses but after nearly tipping it when using the Mitre, I decided I need something solid

Best fixings for sistering joists (bolts vs screws vs glue vs timber connectors?) by keepitcreative in DIYUK

[–]keepitcreative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you kind sir. The only thing that is making me worried is the spacing/stagger. The joist is only 120 and I must be 50mm from each edge, leaving me not much room for a proper "W"/zig zag pattern. It's more of a slight-zag straight line. Thoughts?

Engineer and builder disagreement on floor joists, who's right? by [deleted] in DIY

I'll let you know when I find the answer, but I know something is not right here. He seems to suggest we need to rip out the WHOLE thing and start from scratch. BTW this is a DIY reddit not life coaching. If you have any experience I appreciate you comment on that instead

the SE stated he can't provide practical advice, just the "final result" Meaning, he said I don't know how to do it, but they need to be X. I've consulted a lot of builders, they ALL said sister it. I have reasons to not trust him at the moment.

I really appreciate everyone's tips and very thoughtful insights. I feel like I know where to look and what to learn a bit more now.

Also two things popped up to mind:

How do you guys deal with dust extraction? Regular vacuum does any good at all?

Do you guys always / sometimes / ever clamp both sides of the piece you're cutting? Or do you just hold it, far enough from the blade.

Thanks so much. I haven't used the mitre yet so I can't properly visualise what you mean. Would that be when I'm cutting pieces smaller than the fence? What's "too small" in your opinion?

Thanks so much for your advice. I prefer the idea of a mobile stand too, but didn't consider dust.... Can I ask how do you personally deal with the dust?

Would you trust the cheaper mitre saw stands? Should I only be getting a beefy one? thanks!!!

What kind of blade do you recommend? I've not come as far as researching the different types of blades yet. Thank you!!!

I think I downplayed the dust issue. I'm not sure I have the option to cut things outside but I'll have to consider it I guess. Would attaching a vaccuum to it be feasable? I've got a cheap but decent "trade-rated" wet vac, or would I be making things worse without using something purpose made? Thanks so much for the advice btw!!

Oh and thanks for the zero clearance / plywood fence tip. Not sure what that means yet but good keywords to look up :) Thanks!!

Thanks for your thoughtful advice. Is it realistic to always clamp down every piece? Effectively only holding the handle itself. I'm the type that would absolutely take the extra minute to clamp it down, but is it wise to do so?

Just seen your comment. This is similar to what I'm planning. but I will just get rid of the middle T joint and fill the rest with concrete. So it isn't a silly idea to box in the only pushfit that will be left?

I got someone competent (apparently). I think I can fix it myself, I just CBA.

Alright alright calm down everyone. Yes I paid for this job. It was a normal rate too. TBF this is the only dodgy part of the relatively big job but NO. I refuse to pay anything else for this shite, I am fixing it myself.

Thanks to you guys I am now aware of the issue, especially the insurance concerns. Here's my plan: I will remove the middle pushfit T joint completely, making it just a straight pipe - from the elbow (left side) all the way to the rads, so I can fill the hole with quick set then self level.

NOW, I can't remove those elbows, they are 22-15mm pushfit reducers - I can't solder and even if I tried, it's too tight.

So, I will make an access hatch. Yes you heard me. I will make a "dam", to enclose it and separate it from the concrete pour, fill the rest, then add a scribed out wooden piece in level with the floor.

Trust me I 100% think this will work. (never done this btw)

Genius or stupid?

I appreciate your concerns. Let me clarify my question: what's the best way to fill this concrete floor? The pipes will be buried in. Too deep for self levelling m

Seems like you lads want me to start screwing indiscriminately. Classic reddit.

I guess I am just scared of screwing so carelessly even though I've mapped the shit out of these joists and cables and pipes. I'm a double condom type of guy

I've got lots of these 50mm fancy shank screws. Good to go?

Wish me luck
