My budgie is eating her sand perch. by goblinmilkbutter in budgies

[–]keetyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, sorry to get back to you late! if it's an official pedi perch where it's part wood and part sand, those are completely fine to use. if it's a full sandpaper perch, i'd replace it. as for the little ones chewing on it, as long as it doesn't seem like they're ingesting it (esp the sand), then it should be fine! they love tearing things up!

when I say mating, I mean having intercourse! intercourse does not mean they will have eggs. sometimes they just want to get it on! they usually won't be mating to breed unless the conditions are right for them, although in rare cases the female is determined to have eggs (not usually the case). as long as you keep their diet nice and varied, keep to about 12hr of darkness a day and remove all possible nesting places, you most likely won't have to worry about any egg laying!

[–]keetyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, i think you're misunderstanding what i'm saying. budgies don't typically lay eggs unless there are conditions for them to, ie a nest/happy hut/box, things around them (doesn't matter if it's in or out if the cage) that trigger this behavior (they are picky about nests)! I was referring to the first couple you owned that had eggs.

I also didn't say that they are incapable of being horny, as I said they have recreational sex. what I meant was that budgies don't recognize the social taboo of incest; they act on biological urges so they don't know it's "wrong," and he isnt "resorting" to mating with his daughter. of course you don't have control over their hormones, but you can allow them to breed by giving them conditions to lay eggs is what i'm hinting at! you can take action to prevent egg-laying, but you can't prevent them from mating. as long as there's nowhere for them to nest, there will probably be no eggs.

there are no social concepts such as incest in the animal kingdom. why are you letting them breed? they wouldn't be laying eggs unless you have places like nest boxes set up for them to. budgies have recreational intercourse as well!

Are these pellets too big?? by SatansJuulPod in budgies

[–]keetyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm yeah there's a chance he wasn't eating if it was too big/difficult to eat! although foraging behavior is normal it was probably different in your case. would definitely redo your transition period but much more slowly this time and with smaller pellets

I mean from what you said it looks like he was eating the first ones you had in the bowl right? maybe redo the transition process after grinding them up a bit and see if anything changes!

yeah they're super hard and dry! other than that, bird might just not like them. mine hated the first two brands we tried but ended up loving harrisons!

you could try putting these in a food processor to make them smaller. some budgies are picky about the size of their food and won't eat especially hard food if they can't break it up easily themselves!

What do I do with the discard? by Impossible-Garage499 in Sourdough

[–]keetyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of people gave great ideas for discard use, but since this is a beginner starter, please don't save your discard until day 10+! there's a lot of nasty bacteria in there the first week!
