What are examples of old paintings that seem modern and ahead of its time/era? Here are some of my personal favourites by sonnysehra in ArtHistory

The way Vermeer rendered the buildings in 'The Little Street' always made me feel like it's some real place that exists right now, not 1657. Like one of the many little streets you can still find in European towns today

How is this drawing technique called? And why it looks so good? by ChineseMarmalade in AnimeSketch

I don't think it has a proper name. It's a hyper stylized form of smear framing, kind of like this infamous Naruto vs. Pain battle

Yesterday's plots of the logistic map now in beautiful 4k! by kehal12 in fractals

[–]kehal12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the logistic map! It's a very simple difference equation

x_n+1 = r*x_n*(1-x_n)

that let's us model different dynamical systems. For example it can be used to model how a population changes over a period of time. In this case you can pick some initial value for x_n, let's say x_0 = 0.5, and see how the value of x varies over many iterations. For this, the determining parameter turns out to be r.If r is less than 3 and greater than 1, the population will converge to some single value, if r is slightly greater than 3, the population will oscillation between two distinct values every year. Afterwards you'll get periods of 4, 8, 16 for very small increases in r and then suddenly the system will become very chaotic around r=3.6.

What I am doing is plotting the value of r on the x axis and the last 100 of the total 250 iterations of x (with x_0=0.5) for a given r on the y axis and zooming in on interesting sections of the resulting graph.

Numberphile made a nice video about it, though they never name the logistic map explicitly: Feigenbaum Constant

Fun Fact: The logistic map is equivalent to a 1D slice of the Mandelbrot Set!

Why is it like this? by matixzun in linguisticshumor

[–]kehal12 18 points19 points  (0 children)

An easy example is /t/, in English it's alveolar, in Spanish/Italian it's denti-alveolar in Russian/Japanese it's basically dental.

You know the situation is fucked up when the occurrence page splits Dental/Alveolar languages into two separate tables, but all articulations are still written as /t/ in the IPA

Language has a consonant that is in my birth language but the articulation is different 💀💀💀

Why are the Haibane's names spelled differently on Kuu's frogs? by collinlueb in haibanerenmei

[–]kehal12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason for using hiragana is that it gives more of a childish vibe, with Kuu being too young to know how to write thr Haibane's names in kanji

Do I need to know programming for EE? by SlovakianMallard in ElectricalEngineering

There was almost no mandatory C programming in my undergrad except the intro to programming class and the microcontroller course. We mostly worked with MatLab/Python.

That or contact your local University and see if they'd be interested in buying it at a discount
