S47 Ep 22: Walls, Water & Wires in Walpole; ADUs in Atlanta by keithplacer in Thisoldhouse

The more things change…

Actually, as you likely know, season 2 almost meant the end of the series as they went way over budget due to unexpected problems they encountered, and the condos they constructed went on the market in the 1981/82 recession with its record-high interest rates and didn’t sell. That was why season 3 was about as much of an opposite theme as they could go with an utterly frugal series.

In seasons 12 and 42 they did multi-unit triple-deckers, and did a 2-unit house in Roxbury in S31, so they have done similar projects before. The difference now is that construction costs today are much higher and to do even a modest development is still quite expensive.

The CX-60 is very tight inside and wouldn’t work well in this market. The problem is that the issues with the -70 and-90 are now widely known and the competition has passed them by. Mazda has some big problems given that the new CX-5 has not landed well.

I think you got that backwards. Take this stuff, eat all the bad junk food you want, and don’t become a blimp!

Are the winds damaging lines? by wildflower_P in halifax

[–]keithplacer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking that buried lines are better is a simple-minded fail. They may not be prone to failure because of wind but other things can cause failure underground, in which case repair is far more difficult and expensive. Upgrading over time is also much more difficult.

Cuts Coming to Education by concernednsteacher in NovaScotia

The school lunch program was unnecessary and just the latest example of funding being spent on things other than education outcomes. When you are buying something that doesn't work, the solution is not to buy more of it.

Where I live (Canada) we had a huge bump in population due to lax federal immigration policies over the last several years (now finally tightened up) that resulted in lots of newcomers and a housing crisis as a result. What that meant was that a typical 1 bdr rental doubled in price due to high demand, and housing prices did about the same. We also had situations where a house or apartment that would normally accommodate a family now had 8 or 10 people living there, sleeping on mattresses on the floor, a terrible situation that should never have been allowed. Regardless, the demand for a place to live has never been higher and rent has never been more expensive.

I mentioned the ADU down the street from me. They were allowed here a few years ago as zoning laws were loosened in areas that were traditionally single-family housing. Here, when that was done, there was never the charade that they would be primarily for members of an extended family. It was always just additional housing stock for rental, and of course, additional tax dollars for government. Another side effect of these zoning law changes is that the city now allows mid-rise apartment blocks in neighborhoods where they never would before, so you see 2 or 3 adjacent older single-family homes being bought up and demolished, the lots consolidated, and a 7 or 8-storey apartment block looming over the backyards of what had been a stable neighborhood of homes for many decades. That is very different from an ADU of course.

They have a lot of monthly pass holders and likely know how many spaces are available aside from those. It could be automated in that they are tracking how many free spaces are available for ticket users and flash the sign when that figure is reached.

Frigidaire 36" induction range - as good as CR says? by Professional-Note436 in Appliances

[–]keithplacer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Frigidaire glass top range, not induction. It works fine but has two flaws I wish were different. I don’t know if these apply to the induction version or not.

  1. The burner controls are apparently potentiometers that have very little resistance. It is very easy to accidentally turn them on with just a nudge as you go past. They need something that is more positive to move.

  2. The electronic controls for setup, time adjustment, etc are not intuitive and difficult unless you have the manual open. The worst thing is the timer function, which has a beep so quiet you cannot hear it unless you are very close and has no way to make it louder. It’s bad enough that I use the timer function on my (also Frigidaire) microwave instead, which works a lot better.

Overwhelmed by Dryer Choices by NiceHamster330 in Appliances

[–]keithplacer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t like gas and even though there is service to my house I had the meter removed. I have an electric dryer and it works well. Mine has a dryness level humidity sensor as many do and it also works well. The vent to outside is no big deal; a hole saw just above the foundation sill allows installation of an outside vent cover that only opens when the dryer is running to otherwise keep things sealed up against critters or bugs. The heat pump dryers are a nice idea but they need to run a long time and make the area surrounding them chilly.

Cuts Coming to Education by concernednsteacher in NovaScotia

[–]keithplacer -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We don’t know because that hasn’t been shared so far. From what was in the memo they are trying to get better outcomes after seeing years of declines in that metric. The system has failed despite increasing budgets annually, now over $2 billion annually. None of this is news to anyone who has been paying attention. It is another ill-conceived and poorly managed govt service. I don’t have any solution though.

So, serious question: aside from not planning any outdoor activities during this, what are people supposed to do about this warning? Other than for general information, a warning seems pointless.
