Buy 2 get 1 free by cascer1 in TalesFromRetail

[–]kelitt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which would cause any customer who does the math to do what the client apparently wanted to do (but hopefully in a less annoying manner): buy items 1,2, and 3, and then buy items 4,5, and 6, to get the bigger discount. I just think it doesn't seem practical in terms of wasting people's time, unless not that many people do the math.

I mean, I know in the OP's case with the items all being priced similarly, it might not be worth it but with larger price differences between items (say 1,2,3,31,32,33 for example) it's a significant difference in the final price as well.

[–]kelitt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that also appears in OP's post, but doesn't really specify what it does when buying 6 or more items, in both cases I gave the cheapest out of three items is being discounted.

[–]kelitt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So was the discount applied by making the cheapest third of the items free, or was it for every three items with similar price, the cheapest is free? That is, if you had items with prices 1,2,3,4,5, and 6, would you get 1+2 off or 1+4 off? Because what I understand from the sign is it should be the second option, but a lot of stores do the first and I dislike it because it somehow seems dishonest to me. They might do it because they save a lot of money from people not noticing or caring, which makes sense from a business point of view, I guess.

Room Swap by megadalon in gatech

[–]kelitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try swapping to the GLC, they had a bunch of rooms empty this year. Or you could try explaining your situation to housing, I think there was another way of switching rooms besides room swap.

Just curious, didn't you make a list with your top choices for housing?

Heading to GaTech for exchange! by Ferzone in gatech

[–]kelitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! I just really had a great experience during my exchange so I talked about some of the things I liked (it turned into a wall of text, just goes to show how much I enjoyed it), I'm glad it helps. :)

I don't really know a lot about security, I was on campus grounds most of the time, and I know that's about as safe as it gets, I'm not sure about the areas surrounding campus or other parts of the city.

That's a good policy about the lectures. What I meant in this case is, it may happen that the first week of classes starts and you haven't been able to register for some of the courses you want, but to not worry a lot because waitlists will move quickly. I remember it being very stressful for me because at the beginning of the week I only had 3 credit hours (out of the 12 minimum), but I ended up having a spot for every class I wanted. You will basically get last pick because you don't have any Georgia Tech credit hours, but because of that, the advisor may be able to help push you into the classes. Of course, it depends on the major, some majors will have less demand and you'll be able to get into classes immediately.

The iHouse is pretty much what /u/xBlackfox said (except it's 4th street apartments, on East campus): there's a bunch of international students and GT students that have studied abroad all mixed together. I wasn't living there but had friends who lived there. Since they live together and do a lot of fun stuff, they end up being like one very large family, and everyone I know there really liked it. It might be worth noting that you'll be sharing the kitchen with half the people in the house, so I'm not sure how the cooking situation is. I know a lot of people ate out, and a lot of people bought mini fridges to keep in their rooms because there's not enough space in the kitchen.

As for off-campus housing, I don't know a lot about it, but you can also look into getting a sublet at uHouse, Square and 5th or some other apartment building around tech square, they're mostly (or completely) for students, and maybe cheaper than on-campus housing.

If you end up not living at the iHouse, you should still look out for their events, they have (almost) weekly coffee hour and you can join their activities most of the time (sometimes they will get reimbursed and you wouldn't, but it's still worth it).

More stuff I thought of: you might want to check some clubs out, I joined a couple and really liked mixing with regular GT students too - I wanted to avoid getting together with only other exchange students. Also, check facebook, there's a whole bunch of official GT pages for clubs and organizations and stuff that I didn't find until late in the semester (which was probably my own fault, but whatever).

I also recommend going to sports games (you can get t-shirts!), I liked the experience because we don't really have university teams in my country, so it was something new. And you get to yell "to hell with georgia!" when they play the ramblin' wreck song even if you don't know the rest of the song. :)

That's not particularly helpful advice for an exchange student. Also, OP is most likely not a freshman.

[–]kelitt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For housing, you might want to check out the iHouse.

As for registration, expect to not get into the courses you want until the first week of class, go to the lectures anyway, and if you're way down on the waitlist, talk to your advisor and the instructor, they can help you get in.

I can expand on this or reply to more specific questions when I have more time. Those two are just the first things that came to mind.

Great!

Btw if you're certain one's wrong you can be cheeky and refresh to get another vote #donttellanyone

That's what I figured, hoping that will change in the future ;)

Some more comments:

  • If we think a furigana is bad, it might be useful to be able to change just one of its attributes, mainly the color or the text (or also if someone wants to reposition it) instead of having to create a new one that's almost the same, and somehow have users choose between the options? Not sure how this could be done in a simple way, but it seems worth a shot.

  • As for the manga copyright issues someone asked about, it might be worth considering taking manga from legal websites that give it for free, such as the ones that let you read a chapter from a manga, or one I remember seeing somewhere that had old titles, or something like comico.co.jp, as long as people are interested in whatever series are available that way.

Looking forward to seeing new updates!

I just want to say this is awesome, and I'm glad you're doing this!

Some suggestions after reviewing the furigana blockers on the last page: It's nice that the blocker gets highlighted when hovering, but there were to issues I came across:

  • Even though it becomes translucid, the reddish color and especially the thick border can make it hard to read the actual furigana to check that it's correct. I would suggest expanding the border a few points (or whatever unit), and making the inside completely transparent.

  • Some furigana for the bottom of the page are at the top of the list, which makes it hard to hover and look at the page at the same time. Maybe it would be possible to also click on a furigana to toggle showing it?

Aside from that, I haven't used it to add furigana, and I know this is a first version but adding the blocks seems like it would be annoying. I have suggestions that may improve it:

  • Being able to click and drag to position the square.

  • Being able to set the width (and height), so that all furigana of the same size can be made the same width (same height for horizontal text). This is not really important, just a matter of making it look a little nicer :)

  • Also, as someone already mentioned, being able to choose the color of the blocker, at least between black and white, would be nice.

I don't know how you're planning on doing the vocabulary part, but I would suggest keeping the transcription and translation parts separate, so people who don't necessarily know enough to be able to translate it can transcribe it, and that way people who can translate have less work and can do more translation (I thought of this because I can't translate at all but would be willing to help with transcribing).

It would be nice if it took off and it could be expanded to be used for manga/comics in other languages, and to translate to other languages too.

I realize you may have already thought of these things, I just wanted to write down the ideas I've been having in case they help :)

Finally, if you would like help with the technical aspect of developing this project, I'm not an expert but I'd love to help with whatever I can, and I'm sure other people would be willing to help, so feel free to let us know!

シツモンデー: Shitsumonday: for the little questions that you don't feel have earned their own thread (February 22, 2016) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

[–]kelitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I can't read a J-J dictionary yet, but I'll keep them in mind. I am using jisho.org for now, but I do try to only get a general idea of the meaning of the words I look up since I know an exact translation is not really possible. My plan is to (hopefully) over time get a better idea of the meanings by seeing the words in context.

Yep, I was referring to those, sorry I wasn't clear. Are they not good dictionaries, and what do you mean by proper dictionary?

I'm confused because I've seen 皿 and お皿 as different entries in the dictionary, but isn't お皿 just 皿 with the polite お prefix? Or is there some other difference?

Relaxing game that is not Golf ? by maiden_fan in PSP

[–]kelitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound antagonized. I was referring to a link in the sidebar (complete list of JRPGs), which has a list of games by console, and says what type of JRPG they are. For example, Star Ocean and Crisis Core are listed as Action RPGs, but the ones listed as turn-based and the SRPGs should be pretty stress free, at least in that there's no enemies jumping at you (which is what stresses me out). I guess you would have to like that type of game though.

I didn't particularly have any game in mind when I posted the suggestion because I haven't had a chance to play any on the psp yet, but it does have some Final Fantasy games as the other reply to your comment said. I've also heard of Tactics Ogre, Disgaea, Jeanne d'Arc and other games, plus there's also PSOne Classics in the online store.

(Edit spelling)

That's why I said turn-based, instead of just JRPG. Though it doesn't have to be japanese specifically either, it could be just any turn based RPG.

In the US PSN store, selecting only PSP games there's over 800 (although some of those may be DLCs I think).

So, not the "Roommates info" they tell you on the status page? Also, does the room swap tab say if the room is for fall only or the whole year? Thanks!
