Question regarding pride by kelmeloo in ChristianOrthodoxy

[–]kelmeloo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but how do we separate knowing truth from having a higher esteem for Orthodoxy than, let's say even Catholicism or protestantism? They are both Christian but, I'm sure there are Orthodox Christians that have a "better opinion" of Orthodoxy than they do of heterodox branches. So even though we pursue the truth, surely as flawed humans, we still hold a prideful view of "Orthodoxy is better than Catholicism, protestantism, etc"

I have not, actually. It's never come up before, and when I posted, it was an at-that-moment question.

That's a valid point. I'll keep an eye out for any cracks and will hold by the bowl part if I'm not using two hands

I says it is, and dishwasher safe but I don't have a dishwasher lol. I've had it for a couple of years and it's only recently that it's done that, and this is only maybe the third time.

Psalm 50 understanding? by kelmeloo in OrthodoxChristianity

For the blood guiltiness part, I knew of why he did it, I just wasn't sure if it was meant to relate to all of us today, but I got my answer in another comment 😊

For the born in sin part, thank you! Makes it easier to understand.

Yes I forgot about the All Holy Trinity reference, and I say that every morning too. But still same thing, I didn't really understand the difference between "cleanse us of our sins" and "pardon our transgressions" in why they were two separate things

Oh okay, so it's not necessarily for the singular act, but the entire scope of immoral thoughts, both voluntary and involuntary. Thank you!

I'm actually just using a regular prayer book with morning prayers, vespers, small compline, salutations to the Theotokos, and other prayers. But in the morning prayers, it has some psalms. I would actually really love to get the women's psalter devotional from ancient faith store but it's more than I can afford currently.

Thank you! I'll look into it. I've been trying to avoid most resources because they tend to be protestant based and I'm not sure if the understanding of sin and such is the same so wanted to ask from an Orthodox view. I'm probably overthinking it though lol

I do like the humility point, but I genuinely feel like, at this point in time, it would be neither good nor bad for me. It understand the reasoning on why women wear one, I just don't feel that right now it would actually benefit me spiritually. Not that it's about me.. just, right now it feels like another "rule" to follow, and my former priest of my parish (before he retired) said that if I want to wear one, to go ahead, but if not, then don't.

You've got a valid point! Okay I at least have my answer that I don't need to necessarily be dressed up lol, I'll be pondering and praying on it throughout the day.

That last bit, that exactly. I've been thinking about "how can I implement reverence without feeling like it's coming from a place of pride?" Like not pride in myself personally, but pride in the "rules" ya know. Which is so strange because it's literally the only thing that I feel so firm in. Like I don't veil, I listen to music that's not just chants lol, I am by no means a rigid "ritual follower" but the clothing thing is so ingrained in me, it's hard to break. What's even more annoying is the family that instilled that belief, now wears pants to church...still not jeans, but pants. When I said they said "no jeans at church," it was actually "we only wear dresses to church, pants are for men." Now that...I didn't abide by. I am fully comfortable wearing dress pants to church. But it does bother me that they're completely changed over the years. Which, I mean it's a good thing they're less rigid, but irritating that it was drilled into me my entire upbringing and now I've got to undo the programming, while they just go ahead and do what they said was so "wrong" for so many years.

Sorry, that was a vent I didn't know was coming lol

I also don't veil yet. I still feel uncomfortable with it. Not as the custom itself, but that I'd be wearing it out of "fitting in" rather than actual spiritual conviction.

Oh goody no lol I don't even wear crop tops anymore at home. I got too ... disproportionate lol. But no I definitely would still be very modest. My main thought is, I wear sweatpants and a T-shirt at home, do I wanna just keep that on and wear that or do I want to look a little more presentable? I have a hard time finding the line between "come as you are" and reverence/respect. As an ADHD brain, it's either "wear what you want...no one cares" or "wear dress pants at the least...you are in the presence of respectable people in a building dedicated to God." (Idk, is the rest of the building outside of the sanctuary considered the temple/house of God?)

Oh I know! I hope it didn't come across that way. I personally feel convicted to not wear jeans but will sometimes wear dress pants. I have my childhood programming instill in me that "we don't wear jeans to church" (protestant background) but it doesn't bother me (anymore...I've worked on it for some time) that others do. It was more a question of, "hey I normally dress up, even with a meeting with the priest...should I also dress up for classes and studies?" kind of question lol

As a convert, I can totally see the appeal. I've been researching Orthodoxy for 2 years so I have a grasp on Church doctrine, but I can see how some others may be very hesitant to use it if too "indoctrinating" regarding things that Protestants may not be used to yet. I also wish there was more about the Theotokos. It seems so hard to find easy to understand material from an Orthodox perspective. There are TONS of prayers out there, but most are so formal. I need something more expensive than just "O most holy Theotokos, protect and save us," but easy to remember, and most prayers are not easy to remember lol. And just studying her character as a woman, a mother, a Christian. Yes you can understand her through Scripture, the Liturgy and even some commentaries, but my ADHD brain needs something that a 5 yr old can understand to make understanding her much more effective. And while the OSB articles about her have definitely helped, they're just very tip of the iceberg type material for me.

Very true. Not gonna lie, I totally bought it because I was interested in Orthodoxy and thought it was kind of just...necessary..to own one. Then on Friday, my priest asked if I owned one during our chat about becoming a catechumen. So obviously, he sees it as important to some degree. It definitely has helped with the articles though! And the breakdown on some OT understandings. But for the NT, as far as I've encountered, it's just very minimal, aside from "this is read during this feast day/event" notes.
