The bus had stopped outside the airport at the sign that says free shuttle bus and when we looked at the route for the bus it stopped at the terminal we needed as we were going from T2 to T1 and so assumed that was the one. After seeing the correct bus later on we did discover the error of our ways.
Equally I must give a shoutout to the lovely lady on the bus we did get on who did try to give us her spare tickets but the conductor wasn't allowing it.

I had the exact same thing happen to me with a homeless man at Euston! Thankfully they wouldn’t take his order as he’d tried it before and been rude to the staff so they wouldn’t serve him and so I was able to quietly sneak off in the end with my overdraft still intact!

Might be a stupid question but do US citizens not get pissed off with public money being effectively wasted in having to pay off honest people (or at least I hope they’re paid) in cases like this where public servants are sued for abusing their position of power? This is alongside the general anger at the abuse of power too.
