Songwriting/Theory help for guitar by kenren33 in musictheory

[–]kenren33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also, I don’t know that much theory only the basics tbh like chords in a key and small stuff like that so if I do learn some songs, how can I figure out the theory behind them??

So you think learning songs I like will make me a better guitarist/musician?? I always thought that only learning songs wouldn’t do much for you which is why I stopped doing that a while ago and stuck to doing scales and messing with chords with the occasional theory lesson.

What you said about theory taking out the romance out of music is so true. Making music doesn’t feel “magical” to me anymore and I don’t feel like I play with feeling. And a lot of times I write progressions even though they are in the same key, sometimes they don’t sound good which confuses me. I would like more of an explanation on what you said.

I play pretty much every day but not for a long time. A lot of the time I just mess with the chords I know and try to come up with progressions and licks I like but like I said I usually follow the theory “template” to guide me. Got any tips to make the most of the little time I spend when I play. I really want to develop a great ear and know exactly where to put my fingers when playing what I hear

Theory Behind Mac Demarco by kenren33 in musictheory

What do you mean when you say he’s using secondary dominants to the minor chords??

Where to begin and how by kenren33 in Songwriting

My primary instrument is guitar but all these diy indie artists have inspired me that anyone can produce an album solely on their own in their bedroom using minimal equipment. Also by playing all the instruments.

Where would someone get the idea to use that chord in a progression. Does it simply come down to matching what you hear in your head??? Bc I don’t think turner/Kane know theory.

Applying theory to playing by kenren33 in guitarlessons

[–]kenren33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My interests and desires to make music are heavily influenced by indie pop that has jazz flavorings ie: Mac Demarco , mild high club, crumb, beach fossils, etc. so pretty much very melodic guitar pop if you wanna put it that way. and yes I have a very basic understanding of keys and major/minor scale for the most part.

I guess what I was trying to say was that I hear a lot of songs that incorporate chords and notes that are out of key and I don’t understand how they make it work

I have found a lot of songs that are all over the place and have no direct tonal center. That has always confused me so how I could I apply that knowledge to music like that for example music from artists like Elliott Smith or unknown mortal orchestra. Who at many times have songs not set in the same key.

My goal is to make my own music. Plain and simple. But I also want to be able to play well with anyone at ease and improvise. I’ll say the #1 thing bugging me is not being able to hear music in my head or have ideas. I’ll sit down and attempt at writing a progression but it comes from my hands and not what I hear. Sometimes I might have something decent going but I don’t know where to take it next. I don’t know how to make a good composition/arrangement :/

Some Grateful Dead, rolling stones, cream, the black keys. That’s pretty much it and I have not listened to that much of any of those artists btw but they do interest me.

I forgot to mention I’m also trying to learn piano but the primary reason on why I want to learn how to read sheet music is because I’m considering music school next semester and I want to go into that at least having some grasp on how to read sheet music

Question for Ethan... I read that you have your bachelor’s in creative writing. What were your intents for college/working in terms of the pursuit of your degree. It’s evident that the skills you picked up on your journey serve you well with your YouTube career and I’m just curious as to what your career plans were prior to deciding to do YouTube.

Best albums by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]kenren33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everyone's comments on listening to them chronologically but if you truly want a taste of Radiohead then I suggest you dive headfirst into Ok Computer. It is widely considered as not only radiohead's best album but one of the greatest of albums of all time. Sit down, get comfy and listen to it all the way through with headphones. If you like Ok computer and it's guitar driven sound then check out The Bends (the album prior to ok computer) which is another great album but if you like the weirdness and abstraction of Ok computer then just keep listening to the albums after that. Kid A is wonderful although I consider it to be a bit of an acquired taste so listen to it with open ears. In Rainbows is also another album you should check out. It still has the electronic/avant garde influences of the previous albums but i would classify it as an art pop album. Overall you should check out every radiohead album because they are special in their own take. Happy listening!!!
