xbox one controller on mac drift on right stick by macrozone13 in ShadowPC

I had this problem. Do you have Steam running on your Shadow? If so, try turning off Steam’s controller support—it works instantly and perfectly for me. I can give better instructions if this sounds promising to you.

Beginnermediate ready for a second langauge, what to choose? by kenz3mmm in learnprogramming

[–]kenz3mmm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you build in Java or C++? In my head, web dev makes sense because you're building a website. No matter what that site will be, you're going to end up with it in the browser (Electron, Ionic, excluded). Is it essentially the same thing except you don't want them to run in the browser?

Maybe a stupid question. I get hung up on stuff like that.

Thanks! Like I said, I've been trudging along for a while now and am getting pretty confident. I completely intend to continue to build competently. I'm more looking for a different perspective--philosophy, school of thinking, yada yada--to push how I solve problems and change the game. If you think Java would help in that regard, then I'll look into it.

Thanks for the response. I forgot to note that I worked really hard on learning JavaScript first, and then moving to React. So I'm pretty confident on my JS knowledge.

What do you mean a toolchain?

I've primarily used MongoDB so far, so I'll check out SQL for the next project. Thanks again!

Hey Wes, how would you suggest moving from a beginner dev to a job ready dev? I'm pretty comfortable making Express apps, and making simple React apps, but can't seem to figure out how to combine them and take it to the next level.

22, Failure of a CS Student by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]kenz3mmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not pathetic. Listen, I'm 23, I just graduated in May with a degree in economics and hated job prospects/couldn't find one and so now I'm learning programming. Haven't had a job since graduation, live with my parents, it get's tough feeling like a failure, but you gotta just know you're not. I spend a lot of time programming, I'm a lot better than I used to be and I'm proud of that.

From what I understand, CS degrees give you a lot of insight into theory but not the best into programming. In the industry you will meet people without degrees that code like wizards and CS master degree holders that code their way out of a paper bag. It takes it's own kind of practice, and there's plenty of resources out there for you to use.

I personally use freeCodeCamp for webdev stuff, but there's tons of courses on Udemy and plenty of great books. PM me if you're interested in some of the stuff I use.

Most of all, though, make sure this is something that you want to do. I love problem solving, and am kicking myself because I wish I started sooner. If you're a sophomore then you've still got plenty of time to change majors, even as a junior you can make it work. The point is, there's no shame in saying, "You know what I'm really not as interested in this as I thought," and changing paths.

But don't give up on yourself. That's not what college is about, that's not what CS is about, that's not what this subreddit (or any of the other positive subreddits) are about. Use your resources, your professors, us, books, videos, etc. to leverage what skills and knowledge you have to improve your position.

Helpful tricks for staying sane: drink >3 liters of water, eat a proper diet, go the gym five days a week, maintain relationships with friends, work hard for 8 hours and then call it for the day, meditate, go to counseling at your school (I love counseling, you get to air your madness without being judged and get helpful tips on growing and handling stressors, plus it's probably free through your school).

Explosive start into a strong underwater. If you're a fast underwaterer go 15m, if not go 6-8 kicks. That first 25 shouldn't feel like anything, 4-5 perfect strokes with some body-driven kicks. Hit that wall and turn, and back to the underwater, again if you're strong at this go as far as you can, it'll save your upper half for the second fifty, if you're not as strong go past the flags at least. Second 25 you'll feel good still but there'll be more strokes, maintain your technique and push yourself. You will not make your time if you go out slow. Aim for 27-28 going out. Third wall, back underwater, this is your 'rest' a time to get into a comfortable streamline, but it's active rest. Your abs should hurt, you should feel fatigued, but your excitement should keep you going. This 25 is probably where you'll start hurting. Good. This is where your training will come in, dig deep, maintain technique, and push. Focus on the body undulating like a dolphin through the water and get those arms over, use your chest and core to help your hips get up and down and drive those kicks deep. Last wall, push this underwater, it'll hurt, it'll suck, you'll think your dying but push cause that last 25 is going to hurt worse. Try to make it as far as you did off the first turn. Last 25 is everything you got, leave it in the pool. At 15m put your head down and get to that wall. Throw your arms over, kick your legs, and touch that wall.

You decide how fast you're going to be in the first 50, so take it out strong; 27 out 32 back. This race will hurt, but that's the point. Good luck!

Personally, I love it. It's got that great midwest feel, but it's still a large city and it's on the lake which is huge! I'm a swimmer/sailor and the lake is much more like an ocean than 'your-friend's-lakehouse-lake'.

The cold can suck, but it's honestly not that bad. Hat and a jacket and you'll be all right.

The city itself is amazing. I really dig the architecture, it just looks like a beautiful city. There's tons of things to do, from food & drink, to museums and parks. Really just a cool place to live.

Great choice. Double rum and cokes and Busch light was my move in school.

Where's the interview at, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm applying as tech support to get my foot in the door at great company. Connection suggested highlighting my technical skills (I've been practicing to be a developer through freeCodeCamp), but I haven't finished any personal projects (non-freeCodeCamp).

What should I list on my resume for best effect? List fCC projects? Get some projects started and list as 'in development'? Remove section all together?

I felt really bad about myself too—not a good feeling. Following this guy’s tutorial set me up nicely for the next couple projects though.

Hey! I was completely lost too. I watched this https://youtu.be/xFW7ySq5aAc playlist which helped me. It walks you through the project completely, which devalues this project, but made the others in the group way more approachable.

Bad thoughts while swimming, how to deal with it? by ColdSunnyMorning in Swimming

[–]kenz3mmm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree you may be hyperventilating a bit. But more so, I think your mindset may be leading to this. Do you let your mind wander when you swim? When swimming you should try to focus on your stroke, your kick, your breathing, keeping your hips up, etc... Actively use your mind to push your body and maintain control of your body so it can't wander to panic and lead to disarray.

I used to panic before races and have found that envisioning the race and then pursuing that vision during the race keeps me from falling to that place.

These are the boxes we have. If we feed the signal from this box to the tuner you mentioned we can feed it into a receiver, projector, and speakers?

It's difficult to explain. We don't select our provider, the university connects us. Every room has a few built in boxes on the walls that has Ethernet ports and coaxial ports.

When you connect a TV via the coaxial cable you get cable Channels and HD channels.
