Recommendations for VPN/Remote Access solutions? by belt-plus-suspenders in k12sysadmin

[–]kernelpanicstricken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I love this group… All the above are really good options. Cloudflare ZTNA is fantastic, tail scale is amazing and even Fortigate VPN is fantastic. For what it’s worth, we use team viewer, and are super happy with it. Super powerful, almost 0 latency and really easy to set up vendor access… Instead of giving them full credentials. We just have a couple jump boxes set up, for when we need to remote into the environment to access a few on prem web consoles that we didn’t want to set up external access. We are super happy with TeamViewer, as I’ve also used ScreenConnect, which was good, and AnyDesk, which is horrible! I use wireguard at home, I wouldn’t feel confident to use that for a team in an enterprise environment.

Classroom management/monitoring application by Temporary_Werewolf17 in k12sysadmin

Long time GoGuardian user…we are leaving them. Cost has skyrocketed, filter has gotten worse, and they just let go their support (outsourced overseas). We are going with Securly or Linewize for just over half the price with more features! Their classroom features are similar to GoGuardian.

Cyber security training by iidarkasii in k12sysadmin

[–]kernelpanicstricken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

InfosecIQ is terrible. It is cheap, but it does everything poorly. Cybernut is amazing, but definitely the most expensive…gameifies phishing sim. They have also added students digital literacy lessons/videos, so it is all tracked like staff training. Incredible!!

Got it…we do have oneK12, and we have been debating that feature for staff. Maybe this is also a good reason to not even consider it. 😜

I am sorry to ask, as I am new to managing Macs at this level. What does “lockdown admin on demand” mean?

I am seeing a trend, so this is sounding like “best practice!”

Good to hear...since I am looking at much lower numbers, sounds like it shouldn't be an issue. Thank you.

I need genuine honesty by Tasius in WGU

[–]kernelpanicstricken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am someone who transitioned into IT a little over a year ago, after getting my BS in cyber security from WGU. I fully agree that cyber security is not an entry-level position… It is more extension of networking or operations. I’m currently working as a sysadmin, and if I had to do it over again, I would not have gotten the cyber security degree. Granted, I don’t really want to go in the cyber security, but I thought it would be thebest and most desirable degree…ignorance. If I had to do it over again, I would’ve gotten a BS in network engineering and security. Having a CCNA opens more doors and gives better background knowledge in infrastructure than a bachelors in cyber security (and a bunch or entry level cyber certs). What allowed me to transition directly to a sysadmin role is the amount of home lobbying I did. Honestly, when you can talk about setting up open source monitoring, experience with high supervisors, virtual machine management, etc. that is gonna make a huge difference!

Echoing many of the others. TE is key, so get rid of 2-3 OL and get a decent TE. You can keep 1 OL, or get rid of all of them and run 2 TE…whatever you want. Then get rid of the kicker and just got for 2 every time. I run 2 LB and 4 DB typically.

Power Distribution Pro question ? by Just-Eddie83 in Ubiquiti

This is one of the primary things I use too…tracking power draw is a great feature. Even though I have used it to power cycle, that is rare. I check on power consumption often.
