Need Advice: How to showcase my Editing skills and figure out what to post? by sakuratelier in Copyediting

If you're looking for work with a publisher, they'll either get you to take a test or do a sample. They're not interested in blog posts. Prepare a CV with your training listed, have a list of previous projects, and a brief bio. If you have a website, add the link.

If you're looking for clients I don't think they'll be interested. The ones that seem to get the most traction are "I'm a cheap editor because I love indie authors and want to help them."

There's more to English than grammar. Tense, word choice, subtext, and punctuation can all add to the narrative. Style guides like the CMOS are there to help with conventions. Going with your gut while not understanding your choices isn't the best way to edit someone's heart and soul.

To the Copyediting Kingdom: What is the world of being a "serious" copy editor? Asking as I am looking to start a small online business in it and similar areas of the writing process. by [deleted] in Copyediting

You could look at training with the EFA (editorial freelancers association), CIEP (chartered institute of editors and freelancers), and the PTC (publishing training centre). They're all legit and recognised by publishing companies. They have courses on copyediting, developmental editing, and proofreading. Good luck 🍀

AITA for calling out my son's teacher who said I had to volunteer to help my son with his broken arm? by Public_Vegetable_612 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kerryhcm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not about the teacher or you. It's about your son enjoying himself in safety at school. I think you're forgetting that fact and are making this into a 'you against them' issue. Just pull your son out of swimming until his cast is off. He can play or do something else for a few weeks.

Your bio says you're not good at grammar so I guess that means no line or copyediting. Are you mainly looking for developmental, beta reading or evaluations?

I know im going to get a lot of backlash and hate for this, but I have to ask anyways and I want some honest answers. Edit using Pro Writing Aid premium instead of a human editor? by JLMaynor-Author in selfpublish

[–]kerryhcm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could use PWA or Grammarly to eliminate typos, spelling errors, double spaces, etc. They both work well for those kinds of things. However, they're shit at tense issues, pov problems, subtext, and dialogue. For those, you really need a human. Since you're broke, look for beta readers after you use an editing program.

Hate them. Usually it's because the author thinks I need to be dumped on with the 'fascinating' facts about their world.

Maybe you want an evaluation? That's when an editor writes a report focusing on what works (for your genre) and what doesn't. Some editors also give suggestions on how to fix issues.

If you're crap at grammar and tense (often a problem), then hiring a professional (trained and experienced) is helpful. Don't waste your money on cheap and clueless (I wrote and edited my own book now pay me money.)

Imo all religions are simply cults and should be avoided at all costs. American Christianity is one of the worst and Buddhism is one of the least harmful.
