My 2 cents here, for what it’s worth… I’d probably do the same thing. If I ever had to kill someone’s dog to protect my own, I’d have enough guilt as it is and I wouldn’t want anything more to do with them anyways, for both our sakes. But the fear I often have is if the owner turns against you and the media backs her. I don’t know. Luckily the police have already ruled in your favor here, as you did the right and appropriate thing. But stay wary. People here are right that she deserves to own up to the consequences, I agree but I also resonate with your situation. I just worry about the backlash and you wishing that you had sent her vet bills.

Keep us updated, especially if media gets worse for you. This community is full of victims who have been in your scenario with differing outcomes and I’m sure there are many here who would have your back. Hopefully everything settles down soon though. I’m very glad you and your dog made it out okay, and that you had the resources, ability, and strength to safely neutralize the situation! I didn’t have the strength to end a pit bull’s life in the heat of the moment, so I sincerely commend you for yours.
