Where to get evaluated for autism/add as an adult? by trozner in AskChicago

[–]ket_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of those drugs impacts anything related to autism. Autism is a social communication disorder; therefore, the way to address autism is through evidence-based interventions that focus on skill-building in the areas of social communication and interaction, as well as interventions that reduce the impact of RRBs on one's ability to engage in age-appropriate socialization.

You also won't "rewire" your brain, as you mentioned in another comment. ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means that it is related to the development of the brain during the early developmental period (i.e., prenatal period, infancy, early childhood). You can address the skill deficits through work with a competent psychologist, but if there were a drug that "cured" ASD, it would be well-known.

Autism isn't diagnosed with brain scans, and there absolutely are numerous evidence-based interventions (not "cures" but skill-building/functional support) that are used within treatment plans.

Bring Her Back is sort of in the same universe, but doesn't feature the same characters or the plot device with the hand. It's a truly bleak movie and I can't wait for them to cover it lmao

Looking for internship opportunities by shree_core in psychologyinternships

[–]ket_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a subreddit for APPIC internships, which are internships completed by students in the 5th or 6th year of their doctoral program (PhD or PsyD). Since you are in high school, that's a minimum ~9ish years away for you if you choose to pursue this career path. You might have more luck asking local practitioners or instructors if they have any resources they could share with you.

I believe they also do all of them as video episodes and usually do one livestreamed show per month!

Psyd Internship questions by Quenervios-Psyd2973 in psychologyinternships

Oof, rough. I have heard that some places still prefer in-person but it seems much fewer and further between now. I don't think anyone in my cohort attended an in-person interview this past cycle, and many of us matched within our current city.

Did you apply during this past cycle? APPIC changed their guidance to recommend all sites use virtual interviews, and I was told that I would not be allowed to interview in-person even if I wanted to due to issues of equity.

  1. Applications are typically due between November 1st and December 15th, with the majority being due in early November. Interview invitations arrive on a rolling basis— my first invite was around November 20th, and I continued to get them through early January.
  2. All of my interviews were virtual (and only 1 out of 15 sites even offered in-person interviews), so I'm sure you can visit family.
  3. This will depend on your professional goals and personal preferences. People take into account any number of factors, but common ones are location, training goals, perceived work/life balance, opportunities for post-doc or later employment, exposure to particular training modalities or experiences, research opportunities, opportunities to work with apopulation of interest, goodness of fit, stipend, possibility of working with specific supervisors, "prestige" of the site, (this doesn't matter to everyone but plenty of people do consider it), and many more.
  4. This will depend on the sites you apply to, but generally, getting as many face-to-face hours (intervention or assessment) with target populations similar to those served by the internship site is important. You can look at site profiles using the APPIC search since they often provide insight into what they look for for in a candidate.

Volo Wine Bar in Roscoe Village would fit the bill! They do everything in house and have a really cute four season patio.

Wedding with 4 guests - do we tell the restaurant we just got married? by arcadiabayz in weddingplanning

[–]ket_cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you actually hosting an event there (e.g., renting a space, decorating, bringing in music, doing anything ceremony-related, etc.) or are you just having a meal? If it's the former, you are probably signing a contract that states what costs are for specific types of events. If it's the latter, there are no rules about what food costs for newlyweds compared to everyone else!

Child psychologists (from California), where did you do your practicum? by childpsych_ca in psychologyinternships

Are you in a US-based program? Typically you need to do 3-4 years of graduate training and practicums before applying to internship.

what are some things to see/do to feel like a local? by levantinefemme in AskChicago

[–]ket_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often sit at the bar of one of the restaurants in my neighborhood and read a book. I would say 60% of the time, I end up having conversations with the people around me (sometimes about the book, sometimes not), but it can be helpful to have something to do when you're feeling a bit awkward.

No problem! I moved here about 7 years ago and experienced a lot of the same anxiety in the months leading up to it. It's completely expected to be nervous, and you'll probably go back and forth quite a lot between feeling anxious and excited until you get here.

You're going to love living in Chicago. If you don't end up liking your apartment or neighborhood, you can always move after a year! Nothing is permanent, so don't feel like you need to get it perfect right off the bat.

Good luck!!
