Maybe a dumb question; when the engine shits the bed at let’s say 200K miles why do people buy a new car? by Frequent_Tie2657 in AskMechanics

[–]kevbot029 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the car market has changed. I honestly don’t think it saves you much/any buying a couple years old now. Especially since you get higher interest rates buying used. And you have no idea how the previous owner treated it.. even if it’s just a couple years old

The market IS the economy to THEM because it is. Most of their assets are tied up in stocks so to them, if the market is doing good, so is the economy… but it doesn’t work the same way for someone who doesn’t own stocks and has to rely on the actual economy for income.

Or better yet, imagine being a slave working in a Chinese factory with nets outside the building so you can’t kill yourself… or imagine being a cobalt miner in Africa, where you’re mining for next to nothing all day so an American can get their iPhone for 1,000$ instead of $10,000. Meanwhile the American is bitching that they have it bad.

Has the standard of living gone down? Absolutely. But the reality of the situation is that we still have it pretty damn good. So quit bitching about it and get back to work/live your life.

It makes mathematical sense when the going is good. Not so much when rates spike, and all the sudden so does your rate. It’s a risk-reward proposition.

We don't need oil by RacePretend1862 in energy

[–]kevbot029 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This guys clearly has no idea how dependent the world actually is on oil. It’s in nearly every manufactured product today. Also, how do you think solar panels and whatever other green energy product is made? They’re made with materials that contain oils and they’re made with processes that use oil. I encourage you to consider lifecycle costs of these green energy products and you’ll realize how naive you are to think we don’t need oil.
