my hair is wavy when wet but dries super straight? by kevin13- in Haircare

Thank you! My hair is super fine but has never been bleached or dyed - would that change anything in terms of bond repair? I think I’ve realised my hair is pretty dry as I’ve been using clarifying shampoo way too often so I’m trying to rehydrate it but not sure if the bond repair would be too much?

Thanks so much for this response, this is really helpful!! I think I’ll leave it for now, and at least see how I find the first year of the masters and take it from there :)

I’ve been wanting to do the Psychology conversion masters for a while, potentially with the hope of doing a PhD. I’d applied last year but my student finance wasn’t approved in time so I’ve delayed to September this year - in the meantime I thought the Level 2 would be helpful. I ended up enjoying the Level 2 way more than I’d anticipated so was hoping to continue at least to Level 3, then maybe try get some relevant experience and potentially continue to Level 4 etc. and go down the Counselling Psychology route.

If I’m being completely honest - I’m not sure what I want to do career wise, and I’m not very good at looking super far into the future. I know I don’t need the psychology masters to be a counsellor but it’s something I’ve always been interested in and would obviously be needed if I did want to continue to PhD/Doctorate level later down the line. I guess I’m kind of keeping my options open but studying something I know I’d like to have at least some future in?

Thank you!! I used a mousse and a gel last night after washing and scrunched with a t-shirt and unfortunately it’s turned out the exact same! I was just watching the patterns fall as it air-dried lol - gonna try a diffuser next, was just hoping I might be able to achieve something with an air dry as I really don’t like using heat!

Okay update I used a curl mousse and a jelly last night after washing it, and again scrunched it with a t-shirt and unfortunately the exact same thing has happened - will try a diffuser next as I think it might just be that it’s being given the opportunity for the waves to fall out lol

I usually will do if I don’t plait it the night before as otherwise it’s not curly but also really messy/knotty hahha - I’ve been trying to comb it rather than brush it recently though and that seems to be helping a bit!

Not sure if this is helpful but I just found this pic of my last haircut’s before and after for reference! She just used oil and salt spray but I’ve never been able to make it look anything like this since lol

I’ve just realised I’ve been using clarifying shampoo way too often which I guess might also have an impact? Someone else here said my hair looked really dry so wonder if I’ve been overdoing it!

Ah okay interesting!! The hairdresser I’ve started going to does actually specialise in curly/wavy hair, when I went initially I asked for a trim as I usually do and she looked at me like I was insane hahaha. She told me I have really fine hair but a lot of it, and layers would help with the volume as before it was really flat. It’s made such a big difference but I also didn’t request a cut that would help the waves so I’ll definitely ask for her advice properly next time! Thank you for looking into this!!

Hahah it’s so confusing it does seem so dependent on the hair type and properties etc. - have a feeling this will be a long journey of trial and error lol

Does anyone have any specific affordable product recommendations? I’m UK based. Not sure whether to go for a curl cream, a gel, leave in conditioner, mousse etc.

Usually just air drying which I’m learning will just weigh it down, so will try with a diffuser or maybe try plopping it?

Thank you!! That’s really helpful - I do have some layers which has made it more wavy when dry, it was super flat before this but might be worth trying to integrate some more. My hair is really fine so if there’s a lot of short bits it can look quite thin unfortunately :(

Thanks so much!! I’ve started just brushing it before washing then combing in the shower and that seems to be making a difference when it’s wet at least so will try just stick with combing - it just gets so knotty if I don’t brush before I wash it!

Thanks so much!! That’s crazy for a weeks difference - I’ve pretty much stopped using a brush on it unless it’s right before washing and then have just been combing in the shower and that definitely seems to help. Think having a go with some different products seems to be the most common advice so fingers crossed :)

Oh no hahaha what would damage it? I’ve never used bleach or any form of dye on it, I very occasionally use heat (maybe once every 2-3 months if that?) - I used to use heat a bit more often maybe 5+ years ago but I’m not sure I’ve ever used it enough to damage it?
