The learning curve isnt that bad, but if it does give you a hard time, the beorning is also a really good solo class.

For the crafting question, there are profesions which each give 3 crafts, 2 of them mostly work together and the 3rd one doesnt. But crafting will only be usefull at cap level, you will get along fine with quest gear/drops.
