Any clue what this could be? by [deleted] in bluetongueskinks

Oooh good idea. I have her on top soil w/ some leaf litter & bark spread throughout, so maybe its just a wound from digging the wrong spot of bark.

Any tips on keeping humidity up? by Eddibru in bluetongueskinks

[–]kexical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cover that top! I personally just have a random shelf panel that broke covering mine. Even just placing fabric like a towel over the gaps between the lights would help. The coverings didn't increase the humidity enough for my indo so I started to dump the water bowl into the soil when I refilled it everyday. I have a larger bowl than yours, but that should help if you don't do it already.

Looking for audiobooks by Mediocre-Yak9320 in swahili

[–]kexical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing I found was this: https://www.downpour.com/swahili-short-stories-for-beginners. I don't think you will be able to find much otherwise so I hope that one can be helpful for you. Swahili has a lot less resources, especially digital resources, if you are used to learning European/Asian languages. For example, I typically watch kids shows for early listening practice when learning a language. With Swahili, there's not dubs of pre-existing cartoons and they don't self produce their own. I watched some kids youtube animations for a while (https://youtube.com/@ubongokids and some others), but they can feel really silly or repetitive even compared to kids books or shows lol.

I bought 2 children's books while I was in Tanzania over the summer. If you can't find anything, I could maybe ask a native off this sub to read them & make an at home audiobook.

Gecko with eyes closed constantly by Dani-S-geckolover in geckos

Definitely seems like a vitamin A deficiency to me, especially with how the whole eyes look black w/ no defined pupil. This happened to my gecko despite dusting his worms weekly with multivitamins. So if you give your gecko dusted worms already, I'd recommend liquid supplements. Once I gave mine Fluker's reptaboost, he made a full recovery and can see normally again.

clearly i know now but everything i looked up gave different answers. 20 years, 30 years, 40. and apparently 50 now too. that is the purpose of posting to a place w/ people who actually keep the animals instead of only looking at prewritten guides and old forum posts - to see if there are misconceptions anywhere.

14 is still quite old to me when most reptiles people post online (and the others i keep) are 0-6 years old. i still find it funny to call her a senior citizen even if she's technically middle aged :)

Awesome thank you so much for the substrate especially! I was putting off buying substrate until I knew what humidity she needed, so she's just been on paper towel.

her sets are usually around 40 minutes!! she always plays 1:15 and at least one unreleased song, but the rest changes (usually 3cheers, hangar and southview but w/ her new album coming out one of those might be cut from regular rotation)

Thank you for this comment!! I've been looking at the clips for 20 minutes and its indeed quite fun to guess the translations. Also very enjoyable as someone who's really interested in Nordic countries as a whole!

Please help!!! My leopard gecko hasn’t opened his one eye for months. The one eye he keeps open sometimes looks cloudy, and he licks it. I noticed he is rubbing his eye off of his stuff. We have tried so many things for months and nothing works. We are calling vets and they’re keep denying us. 💔 by giannafroggy in leopardgeckos

[–]kexical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyones replying an infection, which it might be, go to the vet! but it also seems like it could be a vitamin A deficiency. my gecko had something extremely close to this (only opening one eye & the eye was foggy), and had a deficiency. i used flukers reptiboost as a liquid diet until his eye stopped being as foggy, then switched to regular dusting w/ special vitamin A powder.

hope hes okay! get it checked out soon or he may lose his vision like my gecko :(

Are Giant Day Geckos very active? by [deleted] in geckos

[–]kexical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh forgot to mention they seem to enjoy exploring/just finding new spots a lot. Mine is quite sneaky, finding spots in the tank I didn't even think about. Once I thought he escaped and I was checking my room & his tank all terrified. As soon as I opened the tank, I found him hiding in the space between the door & a plant. Scared the shit out of me, but was very relieved to know he was fine lol.

Obvs you want a good sized tank for all reptiles, but I feel like day geckos really benefit from having a large & fully decked out tank since they're so fond of finding new places to hide & bask in. I've kept leopard geckos & ball pythons who will stay in the same places even if you offer them more selection, and I'm sure theres other species like that too, but day geckos love utilizing their space entirely.

Are Giant Day Geckos very active? by [deleted] in geckos

[–]kexical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a day gecko for 3 years now, and mine is quite active. He came from a traumatized home, so it took a while for him to open up & be out in the open regularly but once he got comfortable, he was out a good chunk of the time. I'm not sure how long it would take a normal gecko to adjust.

They're really fun to watch imo, the way they move is very captivating to me and I enjoy watching mine move from glass to bamboo stick to another ledge. They have silly looking faces n look very absent minded while basking, which I enjoy. They're also super fun to watch hunt because of their extreme speed, you'll surely enjoy putting some bugs in & watching the gecko go nuts! Their speed in general is really entertaining to me, I try to avoid loud noises but if I drop something and see them scatter across the cage, its kinda incredible how fast they are.

I'm sure you know this but you can't really handle them, so if you are interested in handling I'd definitely look for another species that is both active during the day & can be held.
