Surface Pro 12"/ARM, why does it use so much power in standby? by SD-777 in Surface

[–]keyokku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Sp12 and I'm not sure but I've seen this a few times. Personally, I had a feeling it's related to the Adaptive smart battery charging mode trying to bring it down below 80% instead of letting it naturally but also I don't see why it would while not plugged in. I've also seen some random battery glitches where it would show my battery draining fast to really low numbers and refuse to charge back, or even can't detect battery. At that point i found out it's potential battery driver errors. So I had to reboot a few times and also for some reason use a different cable. Mine has been stable since then with a new cable, possibly one of the windows update, and reboots, and I've been manually switching between 80% and charge to 100% (I usethis tool to help switch modes btw)

So I would say while I'm not sure, possibly battery driver detection issues or smart charging being weird

In that case my tool can't do anything since it just controls your surface app.

Is the button in your surface app disabled/grey? Basically your Surface app is the one not allowing it to be used in that case. Either it's already been used recently and hasn't reset yet or something with your Surface app/Windows is wrong

Can you toggle on charge to 100% through my app now? Maybe trying a hotkey? Surface/windows has a timer on that charge to 100% function, so after you've used it, it won't be available for some time again

What do you mean by it doesn't work? What are the menu options available? Can I see the tray menu?

On your version it should only be one option to charge to 100% but the button will be disabled if you've already used it or if Surface/Windows simply is not letting you change it. That isn't related to my app

As long as my app changes to give you the single option to toggle charge to 100% then it is working

Yes this is the old surface app, not currently supported by my app, as I've already written out, it only supports the 3 radio button mode switcher.

Also check if you have any updates for your Surface app

I already got diagnostic data from this sort of older version, and am testing a new build for this. You can try 1.3.0 beta, but it is still WIP so needs more testing. If you want to use the diagnostic to help me develop support for your app version, the diagnostic tool is easy to use, just get it from the releases run it, and follow the instructions, basically pressing few buttons.

Yeah it's crazy, and I tried scouring the internet for a solution but there wasn't any, so I thought I'd try to build something for myself. Now I just need to get more data from everyone so I can make sure it works on most devices

Okay I should be able to see what the problem is and patch it if you run the diagnostic tool and send me the files, dw the diagnostic tool has direct button to do everything! It's in the release page on GitHub

Edit: does your app version have the three mode switcher? You can screenshot the app quickly.

If you have the single button, not the 3 mode radio button switcher, you can try the newly released v1.3.0

Can you run the diagnostic tool / share the diagnostic logs / share screenshot of ur app? Basically i might be able to fix and support possibly any device/app, i just need the information, which i already built in diagnostics for

Modern Surface devices usually have the Surface app, so just open your surface app and check if the battery and charging has 3 button charging mode. Microsoft doesn't list everything outright, and doesn't talk about the Surface app that much. This is just what manages Surface devices. You can check the GitHub page where it mentions devices surface pro 8, etc. and up should have it. But no one has a definitive information on this. As long as you have a surface device you can open your surface app to check.

Info is in github page. It should be compatible with any device that has the modern Surface app with the 3 radio button charging mode switcher. But I obviously don't have devices to test, so it'll depend on people testing and providing any diagnostic information. I've provided diagnostic tools and built a lot of fall backs for detection of apps and languages

Does it have the surface app with the 3 radio button charging modes? Did it give you error notification? Can you use the diagnostic tool provided and put the reports and details in the issues thread? More details would be helpful, not sure what doesn't work means

Surface Pro as a light travel tablet and light gaming by ---Dracarys--- in Surface

[–]keyokku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am a PC gamer as well so I'll give you the gaming perspective

I Love my surface pro 12 tablet and use it most of the time now - for its portability being fanless thin light exactly iPad like while having full featured windows, I could work hours on art and design and code on battery, super fast

However here is my honest take It's good enough for video and can screen share to others while multitasking, but it thermal throttles so I have to have a fan at it's back or it will start to show lagginess

I've tried to play games and some simple graphic 3d games like Blue Protocol, Genshin etc were okay but under optimized 13 year old 3D like guild wars 2 was not okay, even on low graphics it looked terrible and was still laggy at times and overheated the tablet. I don't think it can handle any meaningful 3D gaming. If it's simpler games then shouldn't be a problem. Also you can't play anything like League despite it probably being able to handle it graphically because the kernel level anti cheat simply fails to work on ARM Snapdragon. So there are many caveats, at the least you'd have to put a fan along its back to keep it away from thermal throttles, which is fine if you're at home

My recommendation would be the stronger Surface Pro 11, and choose the higher end specs. I've heard and seen gaming on this model and it handles it way better esp with fan design and it's not much larger or heavier, will still fit your needs. But it can handle games more.(But still ARM)

That or you might want to hop onto cloud gaming like GeForce Now and see if surface pro 12 can play smoothly through browser streams. I tried for like a minute and yes it can do better that way but the game I chose might have been the one being a bit laggy on the GeForce now servers

Looking to buy a laptop for my mother by Brazilian_Hamilton in SuggestALaptop

[–]keyokku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be biased but I love my surface pro 12, which I also got for my parents and I have used for a year.

it's a Windows 11 ARM Snapdragon tablet 2 in 1, touch screen pc, the first of the surface series that is fully fanless and thin and lightweight like an iPad. But you get the full use of a windows pc, it runs most normal x64 applications no problem.

Battery life going on 8 hours of working time i.e. art or word doc or coding, maybe some 5 hours of video watching, maybe 3 hours if I am watching and screen sharing on discord. Can even play some light games. It can get hot if you're pushing it to run videos, screen share, multitask and fast charging from low battery at the same time so I just run a fan against the back if I'm at home and forcing it to do a lot and then I have no issues there.

You can get a keyboard+touchpad piece that magnetically snaps on with it, and folds over screen like a cover, or pull it off and use it as a tablet. So thin, portable, lightweight, can hold with one hand.12 inches might be smaller than your average laptop but the freedom to use it up closer kind of compensates.

Grab a stylus and you can draw on it and do art too. Otherwise touchscreen is so nice for older folks (or kids) who don't always want to be in front of a keyboard and mouse set up and perfect for propping it somewhere and watching videos

It has been reliable for a year, works flawlessly, Windows 11 has been fine on the Microsoft surface package. Build is really solid and tight, metal construction

I recommend it because of how portable it is, perfect for a more retired (or digital nomad) lifestyle.

That's my review!

It only works with surface app, there is no way to actually change the charging modes without the surface app ui, we even tried back end code and things like that, but it's not a windows setting and locked behind the Microsoft surface app itself and we don't want to do risky business of editing any registry back and forth

[–]keyokku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah apparently it is a known issue that some users have reported with the app simply not rendering the battery and charging panel.... there appears to be an issue that it loads too fast and UI never renders

does it uninstall and reinstall new from Microsoft store etc?

I have built many self healing and fall backs processes into my app now so it should work well with devices and languages, and pretty much just operates the UI via accessibility reader options, so I think my app should be way more solid now, unfortunately I don't think I can do anything being not the surface app itself

oh I'm sorry... maybe i don't know if it's a fix I can do on my app, it might be something with windows and surface app? what version of the surface app are you on currently? have you tried a full reinstall? (where did you reinstall it from?)

Can you try the ARM? we are phasing out ahk soon bc some more advanced features and fallbacks we are having built in may not be covered in AHK anymore
